Saints may move 2024 training camp out of town, and why it should stay there

Good morning, and welcome to the August 9 edition of the Saints Insider Newsletter.

Big news on Tuesday: I broke the story that the Saints plan to take their 2024 training camp on the road. A planned on-site construction project will force the team to hold camp out of town next year. My column on why that's a good idea and should be the permanent plan.

Dishing out superlatives at the midway point of camp

Monday marked the halfway point of training camp, so columnist Rod Walker weighed in with his camp superlatives so far. You might be surprised at some of his picks for the best, most concerning and biggest surprises of camp.

A change in the lineup?

The Saints released their first unofficial depth chart of the season on Tuesday, and there was one surprise that stood out. A potential longtime starter could be losing his job.

Can't make a deal

The Saints entertained a pair of high-profile veteran free agents on Tuesday but both players left town without contracts, amid conflicting national news reports. Patrick Magee reports on the confusing situation.

Tell us what you think

On Tuesday, we debuted our first Saints Insider Opinion poll. We need your input. Tell us what you think of the Saints' decision to play their starters in Sunday's preseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs.

So tell us what you think: Should the Saints actually be resting their starters in the preseason? Or should they be getting all these new players acclimated to game speed? Let us know in this poll, and we'll share the results later this week.

And finally, a little Saints trivia to conclude today's missive...

On this date in Saints history

Forty-eight years ago today, on Aug.  9, 1975, the first football game was played in the Louisiana Superdome. The Houston Oilers beat the Saints 13-7 in an exhibition game before a crowd of 72,434 fans.

That's it for today. We'll have more news and analysis at NOLA.com throughout the week.

Until next time,

Jeff Duncan
