Climate change is a threat to our planet, no doubt.

And finally, institutions have caught wind. So now governments, local businesses, and everything in between are paying attention to “climate finance”.

Climate finance is the umbrella term for any funded initiatives that aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, advance the transition to a low-carbon economy, or help the world adapt to the impact of climate change.

Investors need to understand how this works: climate finance considerations are likely to underpin companies’ strategies in the coming years, especially when they need to adhere to increasingly stringent regulations.

Problem is, every company wants a decent reputation, so you’ll often come across “greenwashers”: companies that say they do more for the planet than they actually do.

And as CFA Institute pointed out at our Modern Investor Summit, even the honest companies are tricky to assess. You’ll need to check sustainability-related metrics as well as traditional ones, and have tight forecasting skills to assess the long- term payoff.
