Safe Net Zero eBulletin from HSE HSE's Safe Net Zero solutions integrate health and safety into the development and deployment of the new and novel technologies underpinning the UK's decarbonisation activities. Here's a round up of our latest news and activities. As an evidence based regulator, the quality of HSEs science and research activities, including those funded by industry and other regulators, is vital to ensure that Great Britains record on work-related safety and health is one of the best in the world. As such, HSE established the independent Science Quality Assurance Group (SQAG) in January 2023, which provides the HSE Chair, Board and senior executives with objective assurance on the relevance and quality of the science, engineering and evidence HSE commissions and delivers in support of its strategy and plans. Last month, SQAG undertook an in-depth review of the hydrogen-related research HSE conducts in support of its strategic objective to enable industry to innovate safely to prevent major incidents, supporting the move towards net zero. SQAG spent two days at the HSE Science and Research Centre in Buxton evaluating our hydrogen science and conducting a deep dive into many projects including HyTunnel and PRESLHY. SQAG will now consider its findings and feedback any recommendations to HSEs Board. Celebrating our input to Futuregrid at the UK Hydrogen Awards HSE was one of several organisations invited to the UK Hydrogen Awards, which took place on 11 March 2024 in Birmingham, as part of the Hydrogen UK Annual Conference. There were 6 award categories, aimed at recognising companies for their achievements in driving the hydrogen industry. The Futuregrid project, led by National Gas and supported by a number of participating research organisations including HSE, was one of 3 projects shortlisted the Innovation category. The project has developed and run a high-pressure hydrogen test facility using decommissioned gas transmission assets to demonstrate the safe and reliable transport of hydrogen. HSE supported the development of the test facility and subsequent master test plan, providing technical assurance and validation across the project. Sadly the project did not win on this occasion, but nevertheless gained wide recognition at the prestigious event. |
Engaging internationally on hydrogen safety Last month, HSE hosted a visit by the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association of Singapore to its Science and Research Centre in Buxton. During the visit, the Associations President, Noel Chin, presented HSEs Stuart Hawksworth with an award in recognition of his outstanding role in engaging the international hydrogen safety community. Stuart leads HSEs Centre for Energy and Major Hazards and is Past President and Honorary Member of the International Association for Hydrogen Safety (IAHysafe). The visit took place on 11 March 2024 and was organised by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. |
