| | Utah Jazz and Utah hockey club owner Ryan Smith's vision for Salt Lake City has been revealed in an application Smith Entertainment Group filed with the city. The application doesn't include specific plans but includes proposals to turn downtown into a sports and entertainment district with retail, restaurants, hospitality and multifamily residential developments. “Development of the project area, including the Delta Center remodel, will require substantial redevelopment, urban renewal and reconstruction, which will likely include the re-routing, permanent closure and/or bridging of certain surrounding streets,” the application stated. SEG filed the application two weeks before their purchase of the Arizona Coyotes was announced by the NHL. | A stumble changed speedskater Erin Jackson's life, she told graduates of Salt Lake Community College on Friday. In the Olympic trials for the 2022 Winter Olympics, Jackson stumbled on the ice and finished third in the race, just short of qualifying. But fellow speedskater Brittany Bowe, who finished first and qualified for the Olympics, gave up her spot in the 500-meter race for Jackson to compete. “On that day, there would be no stumbles. My stumble at the Olympic trials forced me to refocus like never before and I’m on that day in Beijing I had the race of my life. I had the race I’ve been dreaming for for years and years. And when it was all over, they gave me this,” she said, while showing her gold medal. Bowe went on to qualify for the Olympics in other speedskating distances and won her own medal. Jackson holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida and earned an associate degree in computer science from SLCC in 2020. Read more about what Jackson learned from that fateful day.
