Situational Analysis | April 4, 2022 It's Monday and National Hug a Newsperson Day. They probably need one. South Carolina beat UConn last night to capture the Women's National Basketball Championship. Congrats to them! Be in the Know This weekend, Russian troops withdrew from Bucha, Ukraine, literally leaving a trail of bodies and destruction in their wake. At least one mass grave with almost 300 people was found, men, women and even children with their hands tied behind their backs and executed were lying in the streets. Some of the bodies of the dead even had mines placed on them. The images have spurred global outrage, prompting world leaders to call for new sanctions. President Zelenskyy called it genocide. Stories of rape and murder of the victims - or their loved ones, while they were forced to watch - abound. So what does it mean when we say "Never Again" and what actions must we take to show it? Barn-burner of a story in the Washington Post about Paul Huntsman saving the Salt Lake Tribune, then starting an investigative "unit" looking at Gov. Cox. Some reporters are not pleased. Huntsman's side company is called "Jittai" and the Tribune has used its findings in several news reports. He used "several hundred thousand" dollars to fund Jittai and did so, he said, because âThereâs a lack of financial fluencyâ among the 80-member newsroom. âThis story requires expertise in securities fraud, health-care fraud. It requires technical and scientific knowledge. ⦠Iâd like to see [reporters] broaden their skill sets. This is moving beyond liberal-arts degrees.â Ouch. Some of those reporters have won Pulitzers for their investigative journalism.

Wise Words "Cowardice asks the question, is it safe? Expediency asks the question, is it politic? Vanity asks the question, is it popular? But conscience asks the question, is it right? And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but one must take it because it is right." -Martin Luther King, Jr.
