Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský summoned Russian Ambassador Alexander Zmeevsky on Monday to deliver a protest against threats made towards Senator Miroslava Němcová. Lipavský stated that Czechia would not be intimidated, following a fake post on social media that falsely called for a blockade of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg).
Russian news agency TASS reported that Russia’s investigative committee is looking into the fake statement. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev called Němcová an “evil animal” and expressed a wish for her to “perish in the bloody storms of a new Prague Spring.” Czech leaders have condemned the threats and voiced support for Němcová.
Billionaire Elon Musk has called for the U.S. government to stop funding Voice of America and Prague-based Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL). In a post on X, he described the broadcasters as “left-wing radicals” wasting $1 billion in taxpayer money.
Musk, a close ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, has been tasked with cutting government spending. His remarks come amid broader scrutiny of publicly funded media, with U.S. regulators also investigating NPR and PBS.

The Brno Regional Court has ordered the liquidation of the Czech branch of the Russian biker group Night Wolves, citing the group’s failure to meet legal requirements, including having a non-existent registered office, the website Seznam Zprávy reported on Monday.
The Night Wolves, a Russian motorcycle club with ties to President Vladimir Putin, has organized controversial rides through Europe to mark the end of World War II. Some countries have considered these events provocative and a security risk.
The court’s decision, made at the end of October, pointed out that the group failed to provide proper documentation for its headquarters and did not submit an application to register a new one.
Unemployment in Czechia increased to 4.3% in January, up from 4.1% in December. The number of unemployed individuals reached 320,516 in January, 14,038 more than the previous month. In January, there were 83,323 job vacancies, a decrease of 163,250 compared to December 2024, according to data released by the Czech Labour Office on Monday. Unemployment was 4% in the Czech Republic in January 2024.
Czechia has the highest trust in nuclear energy in the EU, with 77 percent of Czechs believing it will positively impact the future, suggests a newly released Eurobarometer survey.
The survey, conducted last autumn, found that 29 percent of Czechs see nuclear energy as very positive for the country’s technological and energy development, with 48 percent holding a somewhat positive view. According to CEZ spokesman Ladislav Kříž, Czech support for nuclear energy has been the highest in the EU for nearly 25 years, since the Temelín plant began operating.
Other countries showing strong support include Finland, Poland and Turkey. On the other hand, Austria showed the most concern, with 67 percent expressing negative views, while Greece and Germany also displayed some distrust. Overall, positive attitudes toward nuclear power outweighed negative ones across the EU.
