Bouguereau and His Circle: Then and Now, a live auction at Sotheby’s in New York on Thursday, January 26 at 2pm EST, celebrates works realized and inspired by William Bouguereau, one of the leading Academic painters of the late-19th century. In addition to masterworks by the artist, the auction also includes several portrait and compositional studies from the artist’s studio that are fresh to the market. These works are offered alongside paintings by Bouguereau’s students, chief among them his wife, Elizabeth Gardner Bouguereau, who during her 58-year career in Paris participated in thirty Salons with thirty-six works and was the only American woman to receive a medal, as well as contemporary artists working in the realist tradition across continents today, including Mario Andres Robinson.

Get Notified When Robert Posts New Art
I spent my childhood in the Pacific Northwest . As a boy I whiled away a lot of school days secretly sketching in my notebook instead of listening to the teacher. During those days I was a great fan of the cartoons that appeared in Mad Magazine.
I enlisted in the Navy in 1966 and later received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy. Upon graduation from Annapolis I was assigned to a ship stationed in the Western Pacific. The ship's Chief Engineer introduced me to oil painting.
I resigned from the Navy in 1978 and returned to live in the west where I continued to pursue my interest in painting by attending workshops with numerous professional artists. During this period I worked as an administrator at several universities and worked on art projects in my spare time. I also taught a studio oil painting class for 5 years at my last university--the Colorado School of Mines. In 1995 I acquired gallery representation and as my art work began to sell, I phased out of my university "day job".
I became a full time artist in 2005 and I now work in my home studio with a lot of support from Ruby, my wife.
Over the years my work has been shown in numerous galleries all over the country. My paintings have also appeared in numerous gallery shows and juried art exhibitions.
My interest in painting is refreshed by frequent experimentation with new techniques, compositions, and subject matter. These experiments keep me excited and curious about the process of making art.
