~Bennie Wilcox “Her name is Emmy,” I said. “I’m not taking another dog,” Mom said to me over the phone, her tone adamant. “It was hard losing Benji. We had him for a long time. I can’t go through that again. It’s only been two months....” When my mom was fifty-seven, she brought home Benji, a Bichon Frise puppy. She claimed a dog would be fun for my daughter to play with on visits to Grandma’s house. But that was just an excuse. Mom loved animals and had a huge heart. One time she’d returned from work with a cat found in the pouring rain and on its last legs. She and my stepdad nurtured the stray back to life and had him for many years. (Keep reading)
