In today's newsletter, ‘Right to sit’ could become the law across Michigan, Michigan hopes to cut public transit crashes using thermal cameras and a three day rainy period is headed to Michigan. |
It feels hard to believe that we have reached the penultimate month of the year. As we close out October and usher in November, here's a look at the top subscriber stories from last month. Our MLive readers were especially interested in an education story about out-of-state students surpassing Michiganders over the last 10 years at the University of Michigan. Readers were also drawn to the story of Detroit's Corktown being named one of the most up-and-coming neighborhoods in the entire country by Travel Mag. ‘Right to sit’ could become the law across Michigan following Ann Arbor’s lead |
Have a seat: The “right to sit” is now the law in Ann Arbor and it could be expanded across the state under new legislation pending in the Michigan Legislature. State Rep. Dylan Wegela, D-Garden City, has introduced House Bill 5983, similar to an ordinance the Ann Arbor City Council approved Oct. 21 requiring employers to let workers sit down on the job as long as it doesn’t interfere with their duties. An update: A ballot cast by a University of Michigan student who is not a U.S. citizen and is facing criminal charges will be counted, elections officials confirmed. The 19-year-old Chinese student allegedly used his student identification and documents showing his Ann Arbor residency to register to vote Sunday, Oct. 27, at an early polling location in Ann Arbor, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson’s office confirmed Wednesday, Oct. 30. Tell us: Campaigns on both sides, from the top of the ticket and down, have been urging their supporters to vote early. Have you already voted? We want to hear from you. |

Michigan hopes to cut public transit crashes using thermal cameras |
Staying safe: Michigan plans to test thermal imaging cameras on up to 60 public transit vehicles in an effort to reduce crashes with bicyclists and pedestrians. The state’s Department of Transportation received a federal grant worth $551,732 to help fund the program, officials announced Wednesday, Oct. 30. Speaking of MDOT: Between Friday, Nov. 1, and Sunday, Nov. 3, there are more than 35 new lane, road, and ramp closures scheduled statewide by the Michigan Department of Transportation. Rising costs: Higher electric bills and long power outages are a common frustration among customers of DTE and Consumers Energy, Michigan’s two largest power providers. As they grapple with subpar reliability, DTE has sought to raise power rates for three years running, while Consumers has done so five years in a row. Yearly jumps on Michiganders’ power bills may be the new normal. |

Michigan’s weekend weather starts a new pattern - wet |
Weather update: Grab your umbrella, a three-day rainy period across Michigan starts at the end of the weekend. We start the weekend very cold Saturday morning compared to these past few days. Many of us will drop to near freezing or below at sunrise. Saturday will be a dry day with light winds and cool temperatures in the normal range. Most areas of the state will have rain by Sunday afternoon. Looking ahead: Judah Cohen, director of seasonal forecasting at Verisk Atmospheric and Environmental Research, expects the polar vortex to strengthen over the next two weeks. With the polar vortex becoming strong in the next week, Judah Cohen says the next two weeks should be fairly mild over the Great Lakes region and the eastern U.S. What's that?: The polar vortex is a counterclockwise spinning area near the top of the atmosphere and usually centered near the North Pole region. This fast spinning vortex is about 50,000 feet in the atmosphere. |

Detroit Lions like what they saw in first game from new pass rusher |
Most of the football world is focused on hypothetical trade targets or what the Detroit Lions could add to improve their pass rush. But the Lions aren’t feeling rushed to make a move and have been singing the praises of new addition Al-Quadin Muhammad after his first game with the team. Injury status: Second-year forward Ausar Thompson and rookie forward Bobi Klintman, the No. 37 overall pick in this year’s NBA Draft, have yet to step on the court this season for the Detroit Pistons. Since the season began, little has been said about their potential participation moving forward. Roster pruning: Now that the World Series is over and the offseason is underway, it’s time for housekeeping. Expect a few moves from the Detroit Tigers over the next several days—including some that may already be in progress. The Tigers have five days to ensure there’s enough space for players who are currently on the 60-day injured list. |

1,500-pound pumpkin becomes gourd-geous hermit crab for Halloween |
Great outdoors: A pumpkin can don a Halloween costume too with the help of an ice cream scoop, a hammer and a few power tools. Onlookers dodged flying chunks of pumpkin guts as a 1,500-pound pumpkin transformed into a hermit crab during an event Thursday, Oct. 31, at Rosa Park Circle in downtown Grand Rapids. The sculpture was carved by Grand Rapids-based events company Ice Guru. Getting ready for Christmas: The official 2024 state Christmas tree will soon adorn the Capitol lawn. The 60-foot spruce from Eagle will arrive Saturday morning in front of the Capitol in Lansing. Donated by Rich and Dorcas Alberston, the tree will be cut after a ceremony set in Eagle, a rural neighborhood in Clinton County, weather permitting. The public is invited to the harvesting event. The location has limited roadside parking; attendees might have a short walk to the tree. Also in Lansing: Organizers of the annual Silver Bells party in Michigan’s capital announced Tuesday that Jayci Simon of St. John’s will serve as the Grand Marshal of this year’s Electric Light Parade. Simon — along with partner Miles Krajewski, of Yankton, S.D. — became one of the first Americans ever to medal in Paralympic badminton during the 2024 Summer Games in Paris. |
