CMS releases COVID-19 data, 34% of diagnosed beneficiaries hospitalized

CMS has released preliminary COVID-19 data derived from Medicare claims. The data shows a high-level overview of the impact of COVID-19 specifically on the Medicare population. The data confirms that seniors and those with underlying health conditions are at a higher risk of severe illness than younger, healthier individuals.

According to the recently released 2021 ICD-10-CM guidelines, Code U07.1 should be assigned as the principal diagnosis if the reason for the encounter or visit is a respiratory manifestation of COVID-19. Codes for the respiratory manifestations should be assigned as additional diagnoses. Code J96.0 (acute respiratory failure) was added as another respiratory manifestation that may be coded secondary to U07.1.
