How do you make OPPE and FPPE more than just an item on the regulatory compliance checklist? Although it has been 10 years since The Joint Commission released its ongoing and focused professional practice evaluation standards, organizations are still struggling to develop meaningful processes that have true meaning, enhance practitioner performance and patient safety, and garner medical staff support.

The use of locum tenens physicians in the U.S. has nearly doubled to 48,000 since 2002, according to a survey conducted by healthcare staffing company Staff Care.

The OPPE/FPPE task force should select hospital-level indicators under the direction of medical staff leaders from each department or division. Ideally, the same medical staff leaders who assisted in creating the list of potential indicators will also help the task force make official selections.

When delineating privileges for physicians who will provide basic care in an office setting, simplicity is the way to go.

Saint Elsewhere Hospital is about to sign a five-year contract with Teleradiology of America (TRA). TRA is a large, international company serving hundreds of hospitals with a cadre of several hundred radiologists. According to the contract, TRA will begin interpreting radiology exams from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. seven days per week, 30 days after signing the contract.
