From the Archives: Garrison Keillor's The News from Lake Wobegon - 1981

When asked what made A Prairie Home Companion so special, many fans would answer that it was Garrison Keillor's ability to spin a story.  The radio show was first uplinked to the national grid in 1979, and as the show gained a larger audience, Garrison continued to fill out details of all the happenings in Lake Wobegon, his fictional hometown.  It was supposedly always "a quiet week in Lake Wobegon," but it's funny how much can happen during a year of quiet weeks .

"I think the monologue was around 8 to 10 minutes for a long time.  I never did know how to get into it, and then I came up with that first line, which solved the problem so nicely . . . This collection gathers together 21 stories that originally aired in 1981 and are themed from January thru December, many of which pre-date the introduction of 'it's been a quiet week in Lake Wobegon."

From Diane Nordeberg becoming Snow Queen,  Father Emil turning 70,  spring cleaning and planting season,  to the history of the volunteer Fire Department, learning the importance of the warming house, finding out how the Lake Wobegon Whippets are faring to the concluding story with the Christmas Story being re-told Lake Wobegon style.
