Dear Friend, Welcome back to my Week in Review newsletter. Please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube for regular updates on how I am serving the people of South Carolina! Restoring America’s Economy Click here to watch my opening statement. This week, the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs held its semiannual monetary policy hearing with Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. As Ranking Member, I urged Chair Powell to keep controversial climate and social policy debates separate from the application of sound economic principles and highlighted the need to reduce inflationary spending. Hard-working Americans’ resources have been drained by the Biden administration’s progressive governance, and I will continue to fight for fiscal policies that work for the American people and allow them to pursue a brighter future. Contributing to Our Communities Nonprofit organizations, churches, and other charities are on the front lines of providing essential support to those in need in South Carolina and around the country. It is vital that American families – not Washington bureaucrats – are able to decide how their money and resources are spent supporting their communities. I recently joined Senators James Lankford (R-Okla.), Chris Coons (D-Del.), and eight of our Senate colleagues, in introducing the Charitable Act. I am glad to support legislation that will ensure tax-paying Americans, who make charitable contributions, are able to deduct that donation from their federal taxes at a higher level than the previous $300 deduction. This week, I joined Fox Business’ Kudlow to discuss how lowering taxes and reducing federal spending can address record inflation levels and restore the American dream. I am confident that our best days are ahead of us if we empower the American people to control their own resources. If the federal government spends less, you— in return— get to keep more of your money and increase your purchasing power to continue growing our economy. America’s free-market economy is key to ensuring every American citizen has the opportunity to build a better life. Read more about my interview here. Leading With Strength I was honored to be named Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Africa and Global Health, which oversees foreign aid, trade promotion, and counterterrorism efforts in the region, as well as international disease outbreak and response. American leadership on the world stage is needed now more than ever. I am eager to work with my committee colleagues to promote America’s values and interests overseas, strengthen our cooperation with key partners and allies, and curb the expanding influence of strategic competitors such as China and Russia. Read more about my committee assignment here. Fighting for American Workers American workers are the engines of job creation, opportunity, and our economy. Unfortunately, employees in South Carolina and across our nation are being forced into big labor unions that deny them the power to choose how to make a living for themselves and build a future for their families. I joined Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-La.), in highlighting the ongoing Republican efforts to protect employees from big labor unions and give them the stability and flexibility needed to navigate our complex modern economy. Read more about our efforts here. Protecting Our Patients Over 40 million Americans with disabilities and 56 million seniors rely on our medical system to address their patient needs. Every patient deserves quality patient care. A new government price-setting program under the partisan Inflation Reduction Act could feature as part of its price control metric quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) or similar metrics that discriminate against our seniors and those with disabilities. As a member of the Senate Committee on Finance, I penned a letter with my Republican colleagues to senior government health officials urging them to explicitly ban using discriminatory metrics and advocating to protect our vulnerable populations from unequal health care treatment.
