Res Artis Meeting Copenhagen, October 2017
The Res Artis Meeting âPrepare for Production: On Residencies and Artistic Productionâ was a three day conference from October 25 to 27 in Copenhagen hosted by Danish Art Workshops, in collaboration with the Factory of Art and Design. The impressive workshop spaces and facilities at Danish Art Workshops and the Factory of Art and Design provided the perfect backdrop for a meeting that dealt with topics of providing adequate production facilities and infrastructure to artists. The DAW contains studio space and workshop facilities for ceramics, metal, wood, photo, textile, weaving, IT and graphic printing. Cultural activities rounded up the busy meeting schedule filled with presentations, panel and workshop sessions and gave meeting participants a feeling for the Danish arts scene. We welcomed around 120 meeting attendees to Copenhagen and were honoured to count Mette Bock, Danish Minister of Culture as part of our opening session. For our next Res Artis Meeting we move further North and welcome residency operators, cultural workers and artists to the Arctic Circle. The meeting âExploring Sustainability under the Midnight Sunâ will take place in partnership with the Arts Promotion Centre Finland and the City of Rovaniemi in Rovaniemi, Lapland, Finland from 18 â 20 June 2018. This 3-day meeting will address the theme of Residencies and Sustainability from different angles â The sustainability of the arts residencies field; Indigenous aspects; Interdisciplinary residencies; the intersections between curators and residencies; and the concept of âethical tourismâ. Questions that will be discussed include: How can residency operators pursue their activities to better meet the principles of sustainability? How can residencies contribute to sustainable regional development? And what is the social and economic impact of residencies? The event will take place in the remote but culturally dynamic and vibrant Arctic region at the height of the Midnight Sun, offering a topical location for the meetingâs focus on sustainability. Participants from all over the globe are invited to experience the unique environmental arts scene of Northern Finland and learn more about Indigenous aspects to residencies and the need for ethical tourism through the local Sami people. Maryam Bagheri (Iran) appointed new MENASA Cluster Coordinator of Res Artis in our brand new office in Tehran We are very happy to announce the appointment of Maryam Bagheri, our new MENASA (Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia) Cluster Coordinator. Her appointment is two-fold exciting as it also comes with the launch of a regional Res Artis office in Tehran, Iran where Maryam is based. Maryam has diverse experience in documentary filmmaking, researching, film archiving, journalism and documentary film distribution. At the moment she works as the board of editors chairperson for Cinema- Haghighat magazine, documentary film specialized quarterly on Iran. She is one of the board members of Rybondoc center in which the main focus is on documentary cinema. As a documentary film distributor, her expertise is in communication and strategic planning. The Tehran office is a direct outcome of the Res Artis Meeting in Tehran that took place in November 2016 and serves the aim to encourage greater interaction, knowledge and skill-sharing between arts residency centres in the region. As the MENASA Cluster Coordinator of Res Artis, Maryam is acting as a conduit between the global network of Res Artis and the local region. Maryam herself says of her appointment: âWorking for Res Artis brings me the opportunity to meet amazing people from all over the world. Inaugural Meeting of the European Networks Communication Group Res Artis Communications and Operations Manager, Birte Gehm, attended the inaugural Meeting of the European Networks Communication Group in Berlin from October 9 to 10th. Eleven communications representatives from European and worldwide networks came together in Berlin to share ideas and working practices and work towards developing joint strategies and solutions. The meeting was hosted by NEMO at its premises in Berlin and gave participants a space to share and discuss strategies, challenges and experiences relevant to communication. During the intensive two days the participants identified common challenges and discussed shared structures and requirements. This informal exchange is a way to enhance the work of the different networks through exchange, discussion and training. Participants: NEMO, European Festivals Association, European Union of Music Competitions for Youth, Circostrada Network (ARTCENA), Culture Action Europe, European Music Council, International Music Council, European Choral Association, European Concert Hall Organisation, Trans Europe Halles On The Move releases new funding guides On The Move shared three new cultural mobility funding guides for France (with the support of the Ministry of Culture, France and the research support of Maïa Sert.), Spain (EN / ES) (with the support of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports of Spain and the research support of Jesica Gallego Gómez) and Belgium (with the support of the Creative Europe Desk, Flanders and the research support of the Flanders Arts Institute, Dirk De Wit). Res Artis is partnering with Artists at Risk Connection (ARC) The Artists at Risk Connection (ARC), PEN America's newest initiative, is an online collaborative project encompassing more than 500 global organizations that provide resources that can help save the lives of threatened artists. Through this online hub artists and organizations alike now have a clear, easily navigable website from which to network or seek further assistance. ARC is a supportive environment, where artists can "connect," fostering progress towards positive change in human rights. Resources available for threatened artists include: fellowships, emergency support, housing, training, and advocacy, among others. ARC is committed to improving resources for artists at risk, enhancing connections among supporters of artistic freedom, and raising awareness about artistic freedom. How to strengthen and maintain networks- An article by Arts Professional Arts Professional published an article called "How to strengthen and maintain networks" related to the recent ENCATC meeting on networks. Res Artis Secretary of the Board, Sarah Gardner, also spoke at the ENCATC congress on ânew directions in sustaining cultural networksâ, which ran from 27 to 30 September. Contributors to the session included: Sarah Gardner is Res Artis Board Member and former Executive Director of IFACCA; Lluis Bonet is Director of Cultural Management Program at the University of Barcelona; Njörður Sigurjónsson is Associate Professor at Bifröst University and Pascale Bonniel Chalier is a consultant and a teacher at University Lumiere Lyon2.
