On behalf of the Austrian Institute for International Affairs - oiip
I would like to remind you of the following Round Table:
What Happened to Turkey?
Only a few years ago, Turkey was being praised as a model for Middle Eastern countries. Once hailed as a success story indicative of EU's transformative power, Turkey has however gradually slid into authoritarianism, securitizing political dissent. The promising peace process with the PKK abruptly ended in summer 2015; ever since, the Turkish military and the PKK have waged a bloody war in the country's eastern and southeastern provinces. PKK and ISIL bombing attacks have shocked Turkish cities and caused hundreds of casualties. Turkish tourism is in ruins, the economy at the brink of a crisis. Turkey has moved further away from the democratic values and principles promoted by the EU than ever before. Irrespectively, the EU reached a deal with the country to curb the refugee influx and agreed to revive accession negotiations. What happened to Turkey? What has been the EU's role and where are Turkey and the EU heading towards? What could the EU do to act as a catalyst for democratic reform in Turkey? The roundtable will explore these and similar questions.
