On behalf of the Austrian Institute for International Affairs – oiip I cordially remind you on the following Panel Discussion:

The EU Strategic Compass: Navigating a New World of Threats

With the Strategic Compass, approved by the Council on 21 March 2022, EU Member States agreed on a common strategic vision for the EU’s role in security and defence and committed to a set of concrete and wide-ranging objectives to achieve these goals in the coming 5-10 years.

The discussion will address three series of questions:

1. A quantum leap forward?
Does the SC meet the expectations? What are the breakthrough aspects? What are the strengths and weaknesses? What is possibly missing? How is the EU/NATO convergence addressed, in the perspective of NATO’s 2022 Strategic Concept? Which post-2022 follow-up?

2. Austria and the Strategic Compass
What were Austria’s interests and ambitions? Have they been fulfilled? With the SC, is Austria facing its “heure de verité” with regard to European security and defence?

3. The Strategic Compass and the return of war in Europe
How has the war in Ukraine influenced the rewriting of the Compass? How is Russia depicted into the document? How would the SC change the way the EU addresses such crisis at its door? Has the war in Ukraine rendered the SC obsolete?
