Dear Friend, Welcome back to my Week in Review newsletter. Please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube for regular updates on how I am serving the people of South Carolina! Remembering Tyre Nichols Tyre Nichols died at the hands of Memphis police officers nearly two weeks ago, and our nation was devastated as we learned the details of his death and watched Friday’s heart-breaking video footage of his arrest and subsequent death. As our country grieves with the Nichols family, I believe that the death of Tyre Nichols serves as a call to action to reform our criminal justice system. America cannot continue to stand by and watch as the state violates constitutional rights. I will keep on fighting for practical solutions that will prevent these senseless tragedies from ever happening again. Read my full statement on the death of Tyre Nichols here. Celebrating Educational Freedom Click here to watch a recap video of the student rally. This week, I celebrated National School Choice Week, a time to shine a spotlight on effective K-12 education options that work best for families. As the Chair of the Congressional School Choice Caucus, I hosted events in our nation’s Capitol with advocates, students, educators, and parents. I also led legislative efforts to ensure school choice options are accessible to all students and families. A key pillar of my Opportunity Agenda is innovation in education – ensuring that all families have access to a quality education, no matter their zip code. Here are a few pieces of legislation I introduced this week to expand educational freedom: A resolution designating January 22 through January 28, 2023, as National School Choice Week! The Educational Choice for Children Act, which will provide $10 billion in scholarships to students across the nation. The Education Savings Accounts for Military Families Act, to expand school choice for military families. The Student Empowerment Act, to expand flexibility for homeschooling families. The SOAR Reauthorization Act, to increase scholarships for K-12 students in Washington, D.C. The A-PLUS Act, to give local leaders more say over how their tax dollars are spent on education. These events and legislation highlighted the crucial role of quality education and access to school choice in creating opportunities and enabling success for every child in America. Education lifted me and countless others out of the cycle of poverty and despair. I will continue to fight to give educational freedom to every student across this nation. Preserving American Energy & Security President Biden seems intent on using his time in the Oval Office to rack up diplomatic and security blunders left and right, so it comes as no surprise that he would send oil from our Strategic Petroleum Reserve to China. Throughout my time in the Senate, I have consistently opposed any executive action that weakens our national security and strengthens our adversaries. That’s why I joined Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and other Senate Republicans in introducing the Protecting America’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve from China Act. This legislation will stop the Biden administration from undermining our energy and national security. I will continue to push for policies that prioritize America. Our nation’s 1.2 million beauty service establishments deserve the same treatment as other tip-reliant industries. To create a level playing field for the beauty services sector, I introduced the Small Business Tax Fairness and Compliance Simplification Act. This commonsense and bipartisan piece of legislation will boost wealth creation and help many entrepreneurs achieve the American Dream. Read more about this legislation here!
