These mid-year months represent the possibility of summer road trips, recreation, and relaxation. Whether you’re lounging on the beach or wedged into a backseat while driving across the country, it can be easy to lose touch with the rest a vacation offers simply by picking up your phone for a quick scroll. The news remains as volatile as ever, tempting many of us to feel as though we aren’t allowed to take a break from the intensity of our lives and culture. We are. Jesus’ invitation for us to come to him so that he might give us rest doesn’t always result in a cabin in the mountains or a bungalow on the beach. But when opportunities to take a break are afforded to us—whether a night off or two weeks out of town—we are allowed to remember our humanity and rest in the truth that God is sovereign, active, and in control. So when the moment comes when you are able to take a pause, consider a story rather than a scroll. You may just find yourself breathing a bit more deeply, remembering what it feels like to rest.
