Hereâs todayâs forecast: đĽď¸ 17 â 27° in Logan | âď¸ 10% chance đ¨ď¸ 26 â 33° in Salt Lake City | âď¸ 30% chance đ¤ď¸ 26 â 43° in St. George One of my favorite cold weather snacks is cookies and milk (or if Iâm feeling decadent, hot chocolate), so I thought Iâd share one of my favorite cookies for our Wednesday recipe. Every year around Christmas, my family makes a German cookie called âbutterbrot,â which literally means âbread and butter.â When they are finished, they look a little like tiny slices of bread with butter on them! One of the things I particularly love about this recipe is that itâs a tiny piece of history. We can date it back to my great-grandmother in very early 20th century Germany. Over the years, our family has updated the recipe â for example, we use almonds instead of hazelnuts. The original recipe called for raw egg yolks in the icing, which you cannot do with modern American eggs without risking a bit of food poisoning. Also, my great-grandmother never measured anything, so we have no idea if this is even âcorrect.â Overall, this recipe is a snapshot of the life of my ancestors caught in a tiny piece of amber â and itâs delicious too! âââ Butterbrot 1 1/2 cups sugar 1 1/2 cups butter 8 ounces grated German chocolate (my family uses Bakerâs Chocolate) 2-4 cups finely chopped nuts (almonds, hazelnuts or pecans) 3 extra large eggs 1 1/4 teaspoons salt 5 cups flour Method: Mix butter and sugar until fluffy. Add all ingredients except flour until thoroughly mixed. Add flour and mix by hand or with a stand mixer. Place on lightly floured surface and divide into thirds or fourths. Roll each section into a log. Wrap in wax paper or saran wrap and refrigerate overnight. Preheat oven to 350°. Slice dough into 1/4 inch discs. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes. Check around 8 minutes to make sure they donât get burned! Make an icing with confectionerâs sugar, vanilla and milk.
