Kaya!

We are nearing the end of Makuru, the season of Fertility. This is a time of yellow flowers, especially Hibbertia hypericoides and various Acacias.
Community Survey results
141 people completed the annual community survey this year, thanks if you were one of them! Overall, the results were very positive. For example, 75% were satisfied with progress of the rehabilitation and 79% had participated in activities this year. The detailed comments provided in the survey have given us suggestions of where we can do better and what the community would like to see. There is room for improvement in some areas, with only 53% feeling involved in the project. We hope to improve on this, with initiatives such as the Friends of Malvolio Bushland and consultation over a name change in planning. 76% are in favour of a name change to the corridor and we will progress this over the next year. Many comments on the survey requested a Nyungar name and we will of course involve the Nyungar community in this important decision.

37% of those who started the survey did not complete it. Next year we intend to make it easier to complete and more widely available, so we can increase the completion rate. Watch this space!

Annual Report
The 2022-23 Annual Report has been published, along with updated timeline and ecological objective posters. This has been a massive year for the project, with highlights including the Hearts Healing the Land conference, off grid Cockitrough installation and planting of the Woody Meadow trial at Booyi (Turtle Corner). Read all about it here.
Corten steel signs

Have you seen the new signs in the corridor? Fourteen corten steel signs have been installed, with a Trailhead and an Interpretive Node in each of seven zones. The beautiful laser cut designs were done by Johanna Brown of Laeline Designs and feature the flora and fauna after which the zones were named. Wayfinding and interpretive information is being developed and will be added to the signs over the next year. The signs will include QR codes linked to a new trail website, to enable the public to find out more about the history and ecology of the corridor.

Hollow Inspection Workshop

The project has purchased a Cocky Cam and it's time to try it out! Cocky Cam is a 12m telescopic pole with wireless camera, used to inspect tree hollows. This workshop will be presented by Adam Peck, who worked for Birdlife Australia for 5 years before taking on the role of RR8 Project Manager. It will cover survey methods and regulations, plus a practical hollow inspection session.

Saturday September 9, 10am to midday in Malvolio Bushland. Register here!

Friends of Malvolio Bushland

The Friends of Malvolio Bushland (FOMB) is a new landcare group in its infancy. The first event was a community planting day on June 10 at bush adjacent to Tait Place in Coolbellup. 30 community members attended and planted 800 seedlings on the day. A special FOMB cake was cut and there was great enthusiasm for the idea. Another event is planned and we'll give more details soon. In the meantime, please fill in this form if you'd like to get involved.

New Look Newsletter
The City of Cockburn is switching email marketing software, so Mailchimp is being replaced by Vision6 next month. This means that the next newsletter will look a bit different, so please don't delete it thinking it's spam (or a scam!). Hopefully the transition will be painless.
Keep up-to-date!
The Rehabilitating Roe 8 website is regularly updated with what is happening in the corridor, be sure to check it out! Hopefully we'll see you soon at one of our events.
The Rehabilitating Roe 8 project acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands on which we conduct our business.  We pay our respects to ancestors and Elders, past and present.  We acknowledge that the Rehabilitating Roe 8 project area is Whudjuk country and pay respects to Elders and Nyungar people past, present and future.
