AKA have released a first image of their new tyre for 1/8th buggies, the P1. AKA’s latest addition to the lineup slots in between the GridIron and the Impact. The target for the tyre was to achieve longer wear than the GridIron II while keeping a small pin to perform well in the dust. To achieve this the P1 has a more dense tread pattern than the Grid II by using a similar pin size and grouping them closer together. The result is a tyre that has more forward bite and life span than the GridIron II. Sidebite is good and allows the car to rotate well in the turns. The P1 also has a smoother off centre feel than the GridIron. The profile of the carcass is the same as the World Champion Double Down which will keep the car flatter in the turns and keep the transitions left to right smooth. The tyre will hit stores in February 2019.

The opening round of the Finnish Electric Touring Car Nationals was held in Lahti last weekend. The event was held on ETS carpet and as part of a hobby fair, attracting both many drivers and spectators. The competitive Touring Modified class saw Miko Teponoja taking the overall TQ in the tie-breaker with Joel Valander coming in 2nd on the grid. The opening A-main saw the TQ holder taking the win from Georgy Chmigal while in A2 it was Joel Valander who took the win from Miko in 2nd. The decisive third A-main again saw Miko holding the upper hand from Joel, and so it was Miko with the overall win from Joel 2nd as Georgy rounded out the top 3 in front of Vesa Yli and Henry Salmen.

Over in the Pro Stock class it was Leevi Martikainen with the TQ from Vesa Yli and the two would also make the 1-2 after the triple A-main events. Vesa would take a close win in A1, however A2 and A3 went to Leevi for the overall from Vesa in 2nd. Teemu Saarinen came in 3rd from Henry Salmen 4th and Lasse Ilvessalo in 5th.

Coming from Ride is their new DF wing set for 190mm touring car body shells. Inspired by nature design the wings sport specially-shaped wave sections – as seen on dragonfly wings – to create downforce even at low air speeds. The set includes a type A wing for medium to high speed tracks and Modified classes, sporting a full-face wave section, while the type B wing was designed for low to medium speeds and Stock racing classes – the latter wing only utilises wave sections on the outer portions. Included in the set are four printed carbon fibre side plates and the wings are usable for most 190mm touring car body shells.

Korean tire manufacturer are here in Perth with their new ‘Whips’ buggy tires for their team driver and customers to use. Designed on new V6 carcass which features a more rounded contact surface and sidewall for better handling in bumpy conditions. Sporting two different type pins, the mid size pins are best suited for low grip or slippery surface track while the more spaced out square pins provide better forward and side bite. Available now in gold, yellow, silver, blue and red compounds.

Pro-Line have brought with them their new S4 super soft long wear compound to Australia. With the S compound set to replace the American company’s X compound line up, the S4 completes the new S lineup and will be made available for all their different 1/8th offroad thread patterns.

Davide Ongaro came good on his Top Seeding at the 1:8 Offroad World Championships to TQ the fourth round of qualifying in Perth.  The Italian led a Team Associated 1-2 in the evening run with Ryan Cavalieri enjoying a much improved performance as the American manufacturer’s drivers on the whole showed strong.  Having failed to run inside the Top 10 in the opening three qualifiers, Spencer Rivkin would take his RC8 to the fourth fastest time.  For defending champion David Ronnefalk, who broke in the previous round, his day was not to get any better as he suffered a plug failure during Q4.  Another of the title contenders to hit problems was reigning 1:10 electric Offroad World Champion Ryan Maifield who suffered a flame out after he was released from his fuel stop during the 1o-minute heat. Naoto Matsukura would set the third fastest time for the round with his second Top 3 of the event.  Behind him and Rivkin, Jared Tebo would have his best result so far with P5 ahead of Ty Tessmann, who having topped his heat was later demoted to 6th.

‘Better than this morning’, was Ongaro’s reaction to finally delivering on the pace he showed in practice.  With Heat No.1 running after a track watering, the 17-year-old said, ‘in the beginning it was slower because of the wet track but at the end it was good. I had two big mistakes in the last round (Q3) but we changed from 42.5 to 45 oil in the shocks and this made the car better on the bumps. I was able to make a clean run and the wheel nut stayed on’ – his Q2 ended early when he lost a wheel nut.  Again running AKA Double Down tyre, he said for tomorrow he plans to leave everything the same with his focus being to ‘make no mistakes’.

Reacting to his improved pace, Cavalieri said, ’That was pretty good to be honest.  The car was good today and we made good choices on tyres’.  Having claimed his first Top 10 run with 10th in the day’s opening round, the American feels his lines still need working on saying, ‘there are definitely a couple of spots I am leaving a few tenths out there’.  He concluded, ‘its been a much better day for our whole group and we’ll try build on that tomorrow’.

On his run, Matsukura said, ‘I had two big mistakes but the car was good and also the tyre was good’.  He explained, ‘in the first one I also had mistakes because the car was difficult to drive. The shock oil was a little soft and also the tyre but this time the car was good’.  Running JConcepts Stacker tyre he said he planned to run the R2 compound but given the watered track and colder conditions he will switch to the softer blue compound which he said matched the conditions perfectly.

‘It was a start in the right direction’, declared Rivkin after his P4 run.  The former Electric Offroad World Champion continued, ‘there is still a lot of driver improvement to do but the result gives us confidence for tomorrow. We are going to take small steps at a time’.  Explaining the jump in performance, he said, ‘we ran a completely different set-up and went back to what I know’.  His mechanic Richard Saxton added, ‘we still need to get the car working as well as it did there when we are on a dry track’.

Having improved on his previous position every run, Tebo said, ‘I haven’t had a super good run where I am proud of the effort but that time I felt I drove pretty well’.  The Kyosho driver added, ‘It was fairly tame but I fell apart at little at the end so I know I can drive it better’.  On his car, the former Worlds Top Qualifier said, ‘I haven’t changed anything because the car feels good’.

’Not good’, was how Tessmann described his 4th qualifier.  Having TQ’d Round 2 and 3 of qualifying, the Xray driver said, ‘I was expecting high grip but instead it was the lowest I have experienced so far.  We were set-up for high grip. It was hard to drive and was slow’.  The 2014 Champion concluded, ‘we won’t have to run on anything like this again.  The car is good in the day so we’re not too worried’.

The 2018 season of the South African On-Road Electric National Championship concluded recently with the final round. In Touring Modified, Hein Kotze managed to retain his title with ease from Conrad Liebenberg 2nd and Shaun Schutte 3rd.

In Pro Stock 13.5T, only one point separated the top two drivers at the end of the season. Ultimately it was Kevin Hattingh who managed to take the title with Gunther Cornelius taking the vice-champion. Jonathan Wilken came in 3rd to round out the top 3.

In Formula, Pedro de Gouviea had a great season and dominated with consistent pace to retain his title for the 3rd year in a row. Brett Ross and Jannie Hattingh came in 2nd and 3rd respectively.

The second race of the XRS PLMS On-road Series was held in the Polish town of Scinawka Srednia. The event not only attracted local drivers but also guests from the Czech Republic to compete in the three classes of Touring Modified, Touring 13.5T Stock and Formula. The Stock and Formula classes use XRS Hobbywing motors and all classes roll on pre-glued Hudy rubber. In Touring Modified it was Jakub Rozycki who took the win ahead of Jaroslaw Siwek and Martin Korinek in 2nd and 3rd respectively, making it an all-Xray podium.

In Stock, Dawid Klosinski was the man to beat as he took the overall win ahead of Dominik Szymanski and Marek Kusakiewicz, again Xray would dominate the podium with a 1-2-3 finish.

Finally in the Formula category, Tomasz Szymanski put his Xray on top of the podium in front of his Xray teammates, Marek Kusaikiewicz and Przemyslav Cygan.

The new rear hubs feature a revised geometry that includes new camber link attachment points and vertical ball studs for fine camber link adjustments and precise roll center tuning. Remarks – Top Seed for qualifying here in Perth, Davide’s car is loaded with a range of optionals from various companies.  The car has 5mm rear shock standoffs from Italian brand Fastrace who have also supplied the carbon battery box he is running.  The rear chassis brace mount comes from Ruddog, Team Associated’s German distributor, while Davide has used a titanium screw set from T-Works. The car also features JConcepts upgraded turnbuckles and pivot ball adjustment spacers.

It was another TQ run for Ty Tessmann at the 1:8 Offroad World Championships in Australia as the Canadian opened Day 2 of qualifying with a considerably slower time for the 10-minute compared to yesterday.  Topping Q2 with a time of 10:08.083 compared to today’s pace of 10:12.716, Tessmann led an Xray 1-2 with Bruno Coelho topping his heat for his best points so far. Having taken the opening round of qualifying, it wasn’t to be a good start to Wednesday’s action for reigning champion David Ronnefalk.  On his third lap, the HB Racing driver ‘donkey flipped’ his buggy on the right side of the track leading to a broken suspension arm.  A strong run from Spanish Mugen driver Juan Carlos Canas would see him complete the Top 3 ahead of team-mates Ryan Maifield and Robert Batlle.  Former Worlds Top Qualifier Elliot Boots, who so far hasn’t featured strongly, would be the top Kyosho for the third round with his first Top 6 run.

Remarks – The main feature of Dakotah’s 8ight X is a new preproduction carbon centre diff brace.  Set for release shortly, it offers a 10g weight saving and also helps the throttle servo to run cooler.  Elsewhere on the car it, he is using an optional front top plate, carbon inserts in the front and rear arms and the 3.5mm shock shaft conversion.

Commenting on his latest run, Tessmann said, ‘It went ok. We changed some stuff on the car, some was good, some was bad.  We have more stuff to try in the next round’.  The 2014 World Champion added, ‘It wasn’t my cleanest run. I had a bobble on the back stairs and also some traffic so I’m happy to be on pace’.  Choosing to run Pro-Line’s Buckshot S2 tyre, the current ROAR Champion said, ‘it was the right tyre for the conditions. The track was pretty dusty without being blown off (between rounds)’.

A rather pleased looking Coelho said, ‘It was a very good run. Even though I had three big mistakes I still finished second’.  The versatile Portuguese driver continued, ‘All the mistakes were my own fault and they cost me maybe 5-6 second so without it could have been a TQ run.  I need to improve on that part (his driving)’. Asked about his car, he replied, ‘finally I had a very good feeling from the car.  I’m very happy with the whole package. We changed a lot. The shocks, toe-in, camber, a lot of things. We are on a good way’.

Reacting to his Q3 performance Canas said, ‘the track is difficult and the car too’.  The 16-year-old, continued, ‘I am fighting with the car today. It was better yesterday. We need to make it more comfortable to drive’.  Having changed to less toe-in in the rear for the latest run, he will go back adding ‘the run could have been faster’, his time only 0.057 off Coelho.

A content Maifield described the round as ‘OK’ adding, ‘we made a lot of changes to the car to make it safe for the mains but it was probably too safe’.  The American continued, ‘overall it was a relatively clean run. Nothing crazy. I had a mistake in the pits when I braked for another car and hit the wall which cost me a second’.  For the second of the day’s qualifiers, he will ‘make a rear shock change and go up in the rear diff again’.

‘Overall it was OK, it was a Top 5 run the car is not so good’, was Batlle’s summary of his performance.  The 2012 World Champion explained, ‘the rear is squatting even more than yesterday.  We had good speed but we need to improve the squat more for the next one’.  The Spanish driver said he also had ‘a lot of traffic with Ty’,  I let him passed and he crashed and then I had to let him go again. At least we have 3 good results and we need one more to make a good final.  That is the target for now’.

Remarks – Posting a TQ run in the second round of qualifying, the main feature on Ty’s Xray are a new hub design that allows the use of a bigger bearing to ‘improve long term durability’.  The car also features harder plastics which the former World Champion says makes the car ‘feel more precise and predictable’.

Remarks – The HB Racing D817 with which David is aiming to defend his World title with here in Perth features ‘a few small upgrades’.  Using them to good effect in the opening qualifier which he TQ’d, he said he ‘can’t be specific’ about the new parts they have brought to the event but did add they are in the ‘rear end’.  Other details on the car are an ‘improved efficient drive train’ which is using 0.8 module gears.  The JConcepts supported driver is also running a prototype body from the Florida company which is set for release as the ‘S15’.

JConcepts has reached into their bag of tricks to help racer organisation with the introduction of their new motor and rotor storage box. The box includes plenty of space for assembled motors, individually spaced rotors and a pocket for miscellaneous motor tuning items. The box has a small footprint which makes it ideal for short trips with minimal amounts of space. Inside the box is roomy enough for three assembled motors and cushioned with high-impact foam that allow the items to lay in a bed like a cradle during rest periods. At the other end, five areas can house rotors and the pocket at the end gives all-important extra storage. The foam insert material has a grabby feel and allows the user to manipulate to grab needed items. The custom built storage box, moulded black in colour has JConcepts.net logo for authenticity and built-in plastic latch for easy open and close operation.

Team Associated have introduced their new B6.1 series Factory Team graphite motor plate that adds strength and rigidity with its 3mm thick material. The item also reduces the weight by 40 percent over the stock motor plate and it fits the laydown and layback gearboxes on the B6.1, B6.1D, T6.1, and SC6.1 kits.
