Zak Finlay now has one hand on the 13.5 blinky title after wrapping up round 4 with FTQ and both leg final wins. It may not of been as straight forward but for the intense battle taking place for 2nd place between Billy Fletcher and Paul Pinkney, however with a challenging track rewarding the least mistakes Zak was able to increase the gap, Ashley Wiffen able to capitalise on the battle and take 3rd overall. Zak only needs FTQ or a leg win over the final two rounds to confirm the title. GT12 class leader Owen Smith endured a tough day with fierce competition from Mark Parnell lining up on pole with his last run for FTQ, both drivers suffered damage in leg 1 leaving young Daniel Robins up from 4th to take victory from Chris Wilkinson. Leg 2 went to Mark, Owen 2nd Chris 3rd with Daniel retiring from the running. Overall it was Chris Wilkinson with the win from Michael Hull and Nick Upton. In Tamiya Trucks, Malc Hall was close enough to take advantage when pole man Tom Hampson was collected by a marshal meaning a fightback to 2nd with Alan Chipolina banking 3rd. Leg 2 went Malc Hall’s way as well, Hampo fighting against a resilient Adam Southgate unable to find a way through with Adam finishing 2nd in the leg, Tom taking the podium ahead of Adam by a faster leg 1 time. Evans claims 2nd Reedy Race of Champions Posted: 22 Jan 2018 07:45 AM PST Seven years on from when he made a name for himself as one of Offroad’s top drivers by winning the 2011 Reedy Race of Champions, Dustin Evans has claimed victory at the unique event for a second time. The Associated driver becomes only the 5th driver in the race’s 24 year history to have achieved multiple victories in one of the World’s most difficult races to win given its unique multiple heads up race format. A contender throughout this year’s encounter, which was hosted again at the World famous OCRC Raceway in Huntington Beach, California, Evans went to the top of the points after a dramatic penultimate round of 2WD action and then sealed the deal with his 6th win of the event in the last round. This left a stacked closing heat to determine who would stand each side of Evans on the podium, 5 drivers vying for the 2 places. An action packed affair Tessmann came out the winner to give him a perfect 2WD score which together with a less successful 4WD part of the event pulled the Xray driver up to 2nd overall. Having looked like he was going to clean up a 5th Reedy Race title, Ryan Cavalieri would get third behind Joona Hataanen to secure the final podium placing getting the tie break from World Champion Ryan Maifield. Going into the final round in 2nd position in the points, Maifield would break after 5 laps while leading. Also having a tough final race, Spencer Rivkin, who shared the lead with Cavalieri over a number of rounds, would end the event with his worst race and while a throw-out it meant he had to count the 5 from the previous round leaving him 5th overall. RCMC Singapore GP Nationals Rd1 – Report Posted: 22 Jan 2018 07:43 AM PST Last Sunday saw the running of the first Round of the RCMC Singapore GP Nationals for 1/8th GP and GT classes. Having had to move the race from the previous week owing to a small monsoon, Sunday saw a complete change in the weather conditions. Blue sky, blazing sunshine and a very hot track which had been cleaned by the previous weeks rain, provided less grip than everyone was ready & prepared for. After three rounds of qualifying in the GP class, local RCMC Singapore Club Champion Chavit Saligupta from Thailand took the TQ, followed by Andy Moore from Great Britain, and Trin from Thailand, a first 3-grid lock-out by the Infinity team. Local pro Nelson Lee from Singapore took 4th with his ARC after a stunning 3rd round qualifying effort. After an intense battle in the A-Main, it was Chavit who came out on top with 1st Place, with Trin followed by Nelson making up the top 3. An exciting race, with phenomenal pace set by world championship drivers and teams. In addition to the race for the top 3 places, young fresh talent Amirul Rafiq from Malaysia drove flawlessly to qualify directly into the A-main and take a great 7th place despite an engine problem. A World Champion in the making and a great clean drive. In the GT class, Joe Hwee took TQ, with Michael Siow and Patrick Ong, all from Singapore taking 2nd and 3rd respectively. After the usual excitement of an A-Main, the final positions remained the same as qualifying, despite local Infinity team boss Kenji making the battle for second interesting until a tire issue put pay to some very close racing. Prümper & Bultynck win at GP3F Posted: 22 Jan 2018 03:15 AM PST The Grand Prix des 3 Frontiers, also known as GP3F was held by the French MRC Longwy club this past weekend. As usual the event attracts some of Europe’s fastest drivers to battle it out in the Touring Modified and Touring Stock classes. The 2018 edition made no exception and in the premier Touring Modified class it was Germany’s Yannic Prümper who lead a Yokomo 1-2-3 after the qualifiers with fellow countrymen Ronald Völker and Christopher Krapp completing the top 3 as Marc Rheinard and Thimo Weissbauer came in 4th and 5th. Over in Touring Stock it was Awesomatix’s Olivier Bultynck with the TQ from a hard-charging Max Mächler (Awesomatix) and Yokomo’s Martin Hofer. In the triple Modified A-mains it was Yannic who took a narrow win from Ronald in A1 as Marc Rheinard completed the top 3, however the early overall win for Yannic was denied by Ronald in A2 who scored the win some three seconds in front of his teammate. Christopher Krapp would come in 3rd in the second A-main. A3 then held some drama for the runner-up after the qualifiers, Ronald Völker as he scored a DNF while Yannic took the win from Marc Rheinard for the overall victory. Ronald would end the day on the 2 spot from Infinity’s Marc Rheinard in 3rd. In the Stock class Olivier Bultynck started the race for the win with a victory in the opening leg only to become a narrow 2nd behind Max in A2. In the third and final A-main again a very narrow finish would decide the overall in favour of Olivier who ended the leg see 0.3 seconds in front of teammate Max. Overall it was Olivier with the win from Max 2nd and Martin Hofer 3rd. Images: MRC Longwy [mrc-longwy.fr] |
Scottish GT12 Regionals Rd1 – Report Posted: 22 Jan 2018 02:38 AM PST The first round of the BRCA Scottish GT12 regionals 2018 was hosted by Dundee and Angus Radio Controlled Car Klub. This was the first round of a four round series involving Dundee and Angus Radio Controlled Car Klub, Grampian Radio Car Club and Lothian Radio Control Car Club. The series is now in its fifth year and continued the successful format of previous years of 4 rounds of qualifying and 3 finals for all racers. As well as GT12 cars support classes for 13.5 blinky touring cars and Formula 1 cars were also offered. New for this year was the adoption of the Contact control tyre in the GT12 class offering a level playing field for the competitors in this class. Champion for the last two consecutive years, John Simpson, was again competing and looking to make it a hat trick of titles. 2014 Series winner Andrew Edwards was in form and looking to try and reclaim the title again in 2018. Kenneth Rogers, who finished third in the two previous series, would be looking to push the two previous champions and see if he could break their dominance. Qualifying saw a close fought battle between Andrew and John with Andrew fastest early on before John secured pole in round 4 as the only driver on 35 laps. Kenneth was just a few tenths a lap behind and secured third place. Local driver Graeme Dick was driving well and lined up fourth with Steve McInally fifth and Dave Bruce breaking into the A final and completing the lineup. Leg one saw the two front cars get off to a clean start, a small mistake from Kenneth allowed Graeme into third briefly before making a mistake and handing the place back. Andrew was hot on the heels of John and a slight mistake by Andrew at the end of the sweeper saw the two cars come together and a marshall rushing to rescue Andrews’s stricken car. This dropped him to the back of the pack. John never looked back and took the win. A storming drive by Andrew brought him back to second place, while after a close battle throughout the race Kenneth secured third from a charging Graeme. Dave wasn’t far behind and took fifth ahead of Steve. Leg two would see a mistake from John on the opening lap drop him to fourth. Andrew seized the opportunity level the score and take the days racing to a deciding leg and produced a fast controlled drive to take the win. John was pushing hard and unfortunately made contact with another car while trying to make a pass and required marshalling, eventually bringing his car home in fourth place. Graeme continued to get faster and managed to pass Kenneth early on with the two drivers racing nose to tail for 4 minutes before a mistake from Graeme gave Kenneth second place. Steve managed to hold onto his qualifying position and came home fifth ahead of Dave. Leg three was the deciding leg and John made a fast start pulling away from Andrew who couldn’t match John’s pace. However it wasn’t to be and equipment failure would rob John of victory half way through the race while driving with a commanding lead. Graeme and Kenneth were again doing battle swapping places but in this final Kenneth had a touch more pace and was able to pull away. A late mistake from Andrew meant his victory in this leg and this round was not as comfortable as he liked as Kenneth was only a few seconds behind at the tone and closing in. Graeme secured third with Dave fourth and a bad run for Steve saw him retire early meaning that John finished fifth. Two low scores for John meant that he finished third overall with Kenneth’s consistent scoring earning him second place. GT12 final results: In the Touring Car class last year’s winner Peter Eagles was looking to get off to a good start but David Scott had different ideas as he secured pole position. A speed controller problem meant David was unable to start leg one and Peter capitalised taking the win from David Fraser. Legs two and three would see David Scott and Peter take a win each with Peter therefore taking the win overall. David Scott came home second with David Fraser in third. A dominant run from Gordon Dempsey would see him win the F1 class. Source: BRCA [brca.org] |

Having looked like he was going to clean up a 5th Reedy Race title, Ryan Cavalieri would get third behind Joona Hataanen to secure the final podium placing getting the tie break from World Champion Ryan Maifield. The Colorado driver added, ‘I was fast all week and I had a few things go my way but that’s the Reedy Race. A Reedy sponsored driver this time round, he continued, ‘winning it under he Reedy name is pretty special’. Asked about his final race, he said, ‘I didn’t know exactly what I had to do, I didn’t want to know’. Starting from 9th on the grid, he said, ‘Any time I am super patient it works out for me so that’s how I took the start and then at the triple there was a big pile and it worked out good for me. I didn’t want to get too conservative and crash like the last one but everything went right this weekend. I’m super happy’. Reacting to his comeback podium finish, going one better than last year, Tessmann said, ‘It was looking bad after 4WD so to comeback so good I’m pretty happy. It’s not the win but 2nd is the next best time’. Taking 5 wins from the 6 rounds of 2WD action, the Canadian said, ‘My 2WD car was good and for the last two it worked really good. I’m really happy with that’. ‘That was the hardest my car was ever to drive, it was one of my worst races. I was lucky to get a podium out of it’, said Cavalieri after the final race. The Associated driver continued, ‘I experienced everything this weekend. One round I’m in the lead, then I break and next I have my hardest race. That’s the joy of this race’. In the Open class, booking their places with the Worlds best drivers in next years Invitational class of the Reedy Race of Champions, Associated driver Brad Shearer won 2WD from Tommy Hinz while in 4WD Xray driver CJ Jelin took the win over Aydin Horne. Dramatic 5th round hands Evans advantage with one to go Posted: 21 Jan 2018 04:56 PM PST A dramatic conclusion to the penultimate round of racing at the Reedy Race of Champions turned the 24th running of the event on its head with Dustin Evans jumping into a 2-point lead going into the deciding round. With Tessmann putting himself in with an outside chance of the title with a 3rd win of the day when he won the opening heat. The second heat saw Ryan Maifield take his second 2WD win also putting the former champion in with a mathematical chance of a second title but all the attention was on heat three. With joint points leaders Ryan Cavalieri and Spencer Rivkin together with Dustin Evans, who was just a point behind, on the grid, the race couldn’t have been scripted to be more dramatic. Starting up front, Evans lead the way and looked to be pulling a gap as mid pack starting Rivkin and Cavalieri came through before Evans two laps in succession got it wrong in the whoops creating showdown of the title contenders with Cavalieri, who dropped back earlier due to a rare mistake, going to the front. With the win certain to secure Cavalieri his 5th Reedy Race title the Associated driver would land the triple in front of the drivers stand on the pipe breaking a rear arm. Getting around the corner, his car stranded in the middle of the track would get collected by Rivkin who on getting over Cavalieri’s car would then get stuck head to head with Joona Haatanen’s car allowing Evans to go clear for a 3-second win over Rob Gillespie. With Cavalieri getting 9 points, the heat having only 9 cars, Rivkin would collect 5 points for 5th, turning the points table on its head with Evans the new leader from Maifield by a point with Rivkin third, Tessmann fourth and Cavalieri 5th before drops are taken into account. With drops counted Evans holds a 2-point lead over Cavalieri and Rivkin. Going first Evans has the advantage of an easier heat albeit from the back row of the grid, while all the other contenders line up together in the final race of the event. ‘I knew it was going to be a gnarly race’, said Evans. Starting on the front row alongside pole sitter Joseph Quagraine, the 2011 Champion continued, ‘JQ told me straight up he was going for it at the start so I went for it too and kept my line around the outside. I drove awesome for 4-minutes. I was telling myself to keep going and don’t let up but then I backed it off and had mistakes two times in the whoop and had to race it with Cav. When he broke I managed to get around him while the others hit his car. I had it under control, blew it and then won it. Thats the Reedy Race’. Asked about the final round he said, ‘I don’t want to know the scenarios. I want to chill out for a bit and go out and do what I can. The last heat is super stacked and I’m not in it but I’ve still got to go out and drive my own race’. View the event image gallery here. FacebookTwitterGoogle+Pin It |

Tessmann the big winner in 4th round of 2WD Posted: 21 Jan 2018 02:10 PM PST Ty Tessmann was the big winner in the fourth round of 2WD action at the Reedy Race of Champions, the Xray driver now having the greatest number of 2WD wins after notching up his 3rd win ahead of Ryan Maifield. With a 6th to drop from last nights closing encounter, Tessmann is quietly moving into contention with 2 rounds to go. Sharing the lead going into the round, Ryan Cavalieri and Spencer Rivkin maintained station with both drivers equaling each other by finishing 3rd in their respective heats. With both starting from 10th on the grid, they would work their ways up to 2nd only to lose it through mistakes. In Rivkin’s heat it was Alex Kosciuszek who posted his first win of the event ahead of Dustin Evans, Evans finish moving him a point closer to the points leaders. In Cavalieri’s encounter, Joe Bornhorst added a second win to his tally as the reigning champion, distracted by Josh Pain doubling the Monster Triple, over jumped allowing Cole Tollard to close and snatch back second when Cavalieri put in a rough last lap. ‘Its a good last day compared to yesterday’, was Tessmann’s reaction to making it 2 out of 2 for the morning. The former 1:8 Offroad World Champion, for whom the Reedy Race title eludes him, added, ‘My cars has been descent but the track is very tough today. It is definitely not easy out there. I ran new tyres and we have been changing the car each run and I hope the tyres last the last 2 races’. Commenting on his race, Rivkin said, ‘I could have got one less point but at least I didn’t lose the lead to Cavalieri’. A podium finisher in 2016, he continued, ‘I’m still in it with my other team-mates so I’m excited for the last two races’. Cavalieri was clearly frustrated with himself after his race as he came up onto the driver stand for his referee duties, each driver in invitational assisting Nick Black with any calls required during racing. He said, ‘I was coming up on Josh and he doubled the triple and I let it distract me and I over jumped. It was stupid. Then on the last lap I hit every pipe’. ‘Going from the back to 2nd is good’, was how Evans summed up his race. He continued, ‘Myself and Spencer were racing each other but both made mistakes. With the tyres its becoming a difficult situation. Its tough out there but I’m now only one point back so its still possible to win. I’ll keep plugging away’. View the event image gallery here.
