The House of Photography at the Deichtorhallen Hamburg is showing works by the current recipients of the "recommended – Olympus Fellowship". Karla Hiraldo Voleau, Tobias Kruse, and Mika Sperling were selected by the curators of the three renowned photography institutions of the House of Photography, Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam, and the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt. The fellowship, which has been awarded for the second time, supports contemporary artistic photography. In addition to the exhibitions in Hamburg, Frankfurt, and Amsterdam, the photographers will receive personal coaching, advice, and training from the international curators for over a year, as well as additional photographic equipment.

The artists exhibited this year process their own perception and reflection on topics such as love, family, home, migration, tolerance, and the environment in their works. In his series of works, Tobias Kruse shows a personal approach to East Germany and finds a symbolic hinge between past and present in black-and-white photographs. Karla Hiraldo Voleau deals with love in gender roles and interpersonal relationships based on the example of dating culture in Japan, and the Russian-German photographer Mika Sperling, who lives in Hamburg, biographically examines the complexity of multiculturalism and identity, and augments the interaction of the works with the viewer through the use of various media.

Karla Hiraldo Voleau (*1992, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) studied photography at the École de Condé in Paris and ECAL in Lausanne. Her works revolve around identity, vulnerability, and love, as well as gender roles and mechanisms in relations between women and men. "She is her own protagonist, and this position makes her work deeply personal,"" says Kim Knoppers, curator at Foam.

Tobias Kruse (*1979, Waren/Müritz, Germany) studied graphic design and photography at the Ostkreuzschule in Berlin and is a member of the Ostkreuz photography agency. He works on personal, artistic, and documentary photo projects and "combines the major social issues of our time with an explosive poetry inherent in his imagery," says Ingo Taubhorn, curator at the House of Photography, Deichtorhallen Hamburg.

Mika Sperling (*1990, Norilsk, Russia) studied communication design at the University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt and fine arts at the San Francisco Art Institute. She works biographically and examines the complexity of multiculturalism, identity, and location based on the example of her own experience. “Sperling represents a new generation of photo essayists who address historical and biographical references and combine them with new media to augment the interaction with the viewer,” says Celina Lunsford, curator at the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt.
