Good meowning! Cat people who love Leonora Carrington, today is for you.
Good meowning! Cat people who love Leonora Carrington, today is for you. Read more below about the beguiling Surrealist artist’s six-foot-tall cat woman sculpture, slated to make its first appearance at auction in 30 years this month.
With the US election nearly upon us, artists are busy at work. Carrie Mae Weems ran an ad starring Kamala Harris based on her seminal The Kitchen Table series. An effigy of the ever-odious Donald Trump making a crude gesture toward a sculpture of a nude woman popped up in Philly. Curiouser and curiouser.
But today’s must-read is Palestinian-American textile scholar Wafa Ghnaim’s essay on encountering a thobe from Gaza during a visit to the Brooklyn Museum on October 7, 2023. A tatreez artist herself, Ghnaim immediately recognized the dress’s origin and noticed the wall label’s erasure of its Palestinian roots. Her beautiful piece explains why she decided to rewrite it.
We also bring you 10 shows to catch in New York this month, erotic puppet theater, Diana Weymar’s abortion embroidery presented in partnership with the Economic Hardship Reporting Project, and more in this edition. Enjoy, and take care today. — Lakshmi Rivera Amin, Associate Editor | |
