When Passover begins tomorrow I’ll be thinking, as I do every year, about freedom. We are commanded to tell the story of the Jews’ liberation from slavery in every generation so that we don’t forget our past. It is particularly poignant this year, after months of yearning for the release of hostages abducted by Hamas on Oct. 7.

I am also thinking about the importance of free speech and especially our freedom — and responsibility — to tell the American Jewish story fully and fairly. It’s never been more important, given the propaganda and disinformation surrounding us, and that’s why we removed our paywall this fall to ensure that everyone has access to it.

You can support the Forward’s ability to bring you accurate, fair and independent reporting when you make a gift this Passover. With just a week left to meet our goal, we need only 300 additional people to step up to support the Forward, and I’d love it if you were one of them.

It has been a grueling six months for our journalists. But we will not yield from the challenge of covering all aspects of this war and its aftermath, growing antisemitism and the coming elections.
