Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told the world it came close to disaster when the Zaporizhzhia reactor went offline for hours amid shelling in the area. The power plant has been occupied by Russian forces for months. Zelenskyy said fires at a nearby coal power station were caused by Russian shelling and knocked the reactor from the power grid. “If our station staff had not reacted after the blackout, then we would have already been forced to overcome the consequences of a radiation accident,” he said. | | | It’s Coming | The Mar-a-Lago Affidavit Will Be Released Today But expect it to be heavily redacted. The affidavit likely contains information about the documents taken from former President Donald Trump’s Florida residence earlier this month as well as the reasons behind the FBI’s investigation. U.S. Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart ordered the affidavit be unsealed in court at noon Friday and agreed to preliminary redactions from the Justice Department, particularly identifying information of agents involved in the search. | | | | | Gun Reform | Can Join a Militia? Can Carry a Gun, Rules Judge in Texas Challenge A previous statute barred Texans under the age of 21 from buying handguns. The challenge was filed in 2021 by the Firearms Policy Coalition, with a Supreme Court ruling in June guaranteeing the right to carry weapons in public under the Constitution. Judge Mark Pittman turned to historical precedent in his judgment, ruling: “the undisputed historical evidence establishes that 18-to-20-year-olds were understood to be a part of the militia in the Founding Era” and cannot be excluded. Gavin Newsom, who pledged in 2020 to tackle combustible engines and get California on track to an electric vehicle future, as well as for environmental activists who championed the legislation. Transport is the number one source of greenhouse gas emissions in the Golden State. The ban is expected to slash car and light truck pollution in half by 2040 by incrementally changing the face of the state’s notorious traffic through a planned phaseout of gas-powered cars. | | | | | Butt Why? | Talking Back Gets You a Paddlin’ in This Missouri District Cassville R-IV School District put spanking back on the list of acceptable punishments in classrooms in mid-June. A survey sent to parents, faculty and students in May found concerns about student behavior, with the school board voting in favor of corporal punishment “as a measure of correction or of maintaining discipline and order.” The handbook outlines that this can only be done via the “swatting” of a student’s buttocks with a paddle and only for students whose parents opt in. Jones was ordered to pay nearly $50 million in compensation and punitive damages earlier this month by a Texas jury for his repeated falsehoods regarding the 2021 massacre. Jones has since claimed he is insolvent. “Alex Jones is not financially bankrupt; he is morally bankrupt, which is becoming more and more clear as we discover his plots to hide money and evade responsibility,” said Kyle Farrar, a lawyer representing the Sandy Hook families. | | | Study Up | Online Exams Get A for Effort, F for Privacy Rights Pandemic-era exam conditions at home felt a bit too invasive? A federal court in Ohio agrees. Aaron Ogletree, a chemistry student at Cleveland State University, was told to show a virtual proctor his bedroom ahead of an exam last year. The footage was stored by Honorlock, a third-party proctoring service. Ogletree argued this violated Fourth Amendment rights, which protect Americans from “unreasonable searches and seizures.” The university responded that it was not a “search” as the footage is taken for academic integrity and with the full consent of the student.
