Today

Good morning! Today is Wednesday September 20, 2017.
Here is a sampler of some of the latest investigative news from around the country and across the world.

Mueller Team's Manafort Focus Spans 11 Years
CNN
Special counsel Robert Mueller's team is reaching back more than a decade in investigating Paul Manafort, well beyond Russian meddling and a sign of the pressure Mueller is placing on President Trump's former campaign chairman. The FBI's warrant for a July search of Manafort's Virginia home cited possible crimes as far back as 2006. This news comes the day after it was revealed Manafort had been wiretapped before and after the election.

What's 'Build the Wall' Mean? Over 30 Journalists Seek Answers
USA Today
USA Today presents a "landmark" multimedia report: "The Wall" -- the work of more than 30 reporters and photographers along the 2,000-mile U.S.-Mexico border, interviewing migrants, farmers, families, tribal members -- even a human smuggler. "We joined Border Patrol agents on the ground, in a tunnel, at sea. We patrolled with vigilantes, walked the line with ranchers. We scoured government maps, fought for property records."

Tom Price's Private-Jet Travel Is Very Costly
Politico
Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, a frequent critic of federal spending, last week took private jets on five separate flights for official business, at a cost of tens of thousands of dollars more than commercial travel. Ethics experts say the practice, standard for Price, is legal but most cases a misuse of taxpayer funding. Deadpanned one: "I can understand why the secretary might have to use a charter flight to get to a hurricane-devastated region, but Philadelphia is not one of those regions this year."

Big Business Hedges Bets in Climate Debate
Center for Public Integrity
Many big businesses like PayPal, Coca-Cola, and Bank of America issued public statements of support for the Paris climate accord when President Trump sought to pull out. But they also donated to the Republican Attorneys General Association, whose members are fighting Obama-era efforts to combat climate change. Spokesmen claim they need to fund both sides.

Bitcoin Extortion Hack Grips Montana Community
Flathead Beacon
The server of the Columbia Falls school district in Montana has been hacked, and whoever did it sent ransom letters threatening violence or the leak of personal information if a ransom in bitcoin weren't paid. The FBI attributed the hack to an overseas group called TheDarkOverlord Solutions, which previously breached Netflix. A suspect contacted the Flathead Beacon to gloat: "This incident is the last thing you will expect to happen here."

Leprosy Resists Total Elimination
NPR
Cases of leprosy have been reduced by 90 percent since 1985, but there are still 200,000 new cases every year, over half of those in India. Even though leprosy is not as contagious as people fear, it is difficult to detect before complications arise from dead nerve cells. More frustrating is that the disease is very treatable if caught early. The problem is, doctors don't always look for it.

Wyoming: Women in Prison Longer Than Men
BuzzFeed
Inmates in Wyoming who finish correctional boot camp successfully can effectively shave years of prison time off their sentences. But not if they are female inmates. That disparity is now the focus of a federal lawsuit -- just one of numerous efforts to close the gaps between the way women and men serve their time.

Arrested Development for Teens Across Spectrum
Washington Post
Teens today wait longer to drive, work, date, have sex and drink than teens in the 1970s, new research says. These traditional rites of passage into adulthood have declined across all socioeconomic, racial, and geographic groups in the U.S. No specific cause stands out, but it may be less urgent today to grow up fast.
