The international Triennial of Photography RAY is celebrating the diversity of photography in Frankfurt and the Rhine-Main region for the fifth time with a focus on "ECHOES". Eleven institutions and exhibition venues in Frankfurt and the Rhine-Main region will be showing works on the theme of "ECHOES" by contemporary photographers and artists. With exhibitions, numerous events, and a three-day festival on the triennial theme of "ECHOES", RAY offers a multifaceted exploration of photography.

How do images contribute to the understanding of our identity, our memories, our emotions, and the ability to grasp and process current social, communal, and political challenges? RAY Echoes offers no answers to these questions, but rather – like a laboratory – it offers many perspectives and opportunities for individual exploration.

Echoes exhibitions

The artists of the RAY 2024 – Triennial of Photography use photography and related media to explore and reflect on the challenges and tensions of self-perception and human interaction. Their works span the past, present, and future, from the intimate and personal to the collective. By capturing these diverse moments and phenomena, they generate an echo that draws the public’s attention to their themes. Similar to a sound experience, they create reverberation that is perceived as an independent event beyond what is depicted.

On this basis, RAY Echoes concentrates on three focal points: identity, memory, and emotion.

In this exhibition the artists explore the making and breaking away from identities. Echoes are present in the form of reflections on personal experience, transcendence, and the currency of retrospection. Alongside recent contemporary photographs and a video installation, earlier iconographic works are brought back to the fore in times of political polarisation over minorities, culture, and gender.

The exhibition focuses on photographic and media-related images that can trigger an emotional response or echo in us as viewers. By responding with an emotion – an interplay of feelings, thoughts, and a physical reaction — our own experiences and perspectives always feed into the interpretation of what we see.

The exhibition brings together international artistic positions that explore the role of photography as a carrier of memory. In their works, the artists examine how missing or vague memories can be (re)created through photographic images. They visualise the elasticity of our memory in storing and reproducing the past and show how what we have seen fades and is replaced by new images.

The RAY Echoes concept was developed jointly by Anne-Marie Beckmann (Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation), Alexandra Lechner (freelance curator), Celina Lunsford (Fotografie Forum Frankfurt), and Matthias Wagner K (Museum Angewandte Kunst).

RAY Festival

The 2024 RAY Triennial of Photography will kick off with three festival days from 3 to 5 May. On this festival weekend, international artists, curators, and specialists from interdisciplinary fields are invited to discuss and exchange ideas on the theme of Echoes in lectures and talks. This time, the events will take place on a decentralised basis at the Museum Angewandte Kunst, the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt, and the MUSEUM MMK FÜR MODERNE KUNST Frankfurt. Admission is free.
Festival programme: here RAY Master Class

The RAY Master Class took place for the third time as part of RAY Echoes. This year, the Belgian artist Anton Kusters, whose series The Blue Skies Project is also part of the Echoes exhibitions, led the class. Twelve students from the Hochschule Darmstadt, the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach, the Städelschule and the Kunsthochschule Mainz had the opportunity to exchange ideas, create synergies, and benefit from the guidance of an internationally active artist in intensive workshops. The works created as part of this collaboration will be on display under the title Soft Proof at the Museum Angewandte Kunst at the start of the Echoes exhibitions from 3 May to 1 September.

RAY Junior

Accompanying RAY – Triennial of Photography, four-day photography workshops will take place from May to July with children and young people aged 12 to 18 from schools in six cities in the Rhine-Main region. The patron of the RAY Junior programme is once again Frankfurt-based photographer Barbara Klemm.
