Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Charles Ramsey

Former D.C. Metro Police Chief Charles Ramsey has been a common sight on CNN lately, offering his law enforcement experience to the discussion of important topics like Derek Chauvin's trial for killing George Floyd and the shooting of Adam Toledo.

Ramsey, who also served as Philadelphia Police Commissioner, has offered a balanced take to some highly contentious topics over the past few months, including strongly condemning incidents of police brutality.

Thursday, Ramsey joined Jake Tapper on The Lead to discuss the mass shooting at a San Jose rail yard, in which a public transit worker fatally shot nine of his coworkers and then himself. Ramsey very pointedly asked Tapper why CNN wasn't covering gun deaths the same way they have tallied the death toll from the pandemic.

"Just like you keep a running total of the number of people dying from Covid every day, why not keep a running total of the number of people dying from gun violence?" Ramsey asked. "I mean, this pressure has to be placed on our elected officials because these guys are not going to do anything...And unless we put pressure on them, nothing’s going to happen."

It was a good question.

MEDIA LOSER:
Paul Ryan

Former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI) is a man without a party, but he doesn't seem to have realized it quite yet.

He's been a lonely voice of reason among the Republican emeriti, calling out former President Donald Trump's baseless claims of election fraud since shortly after the election. His thanks for this has been to be demonized by the new personalities currently leading the party.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), who isn't letting a sex trafficking investigation get him down, slammed Ryan at his latest event with fellow Trumplican firebrand Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), drawing raucous boos from the crowd

Trump himself took a swipe at Ryan in an email to his PAC distribution list, slamming the former speaker for losing the 2012 presidential election as Mitt Romney's running mate and for his role on the Fox News board.

CNN host Jim Acosta and commentator Matthew Dowd both denounced Ryan for being unable to thwart the rise of Trumpism, both as a former member of GOP leadership and in his Fox News role.

"He's too late," said Acosta. "If you want to redo the Republican party, you’ve got to start with Fox News," said Dowd.

The A-Block

It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world

"We’re all mad here," the Cheshire Cat famously explains to Alice during her first foray into Wonderland. "I’m mad. You’re mad." Alice asks, "How do you know I’m mad?" and the Cat replies, "You must be, or you wouldn’t have come here.” (Photo of Central Park's Alice in Wonderland statue by Cindy Ord/Getty Images.)

That's a very spot-on description of our current political and media environment, and here's a roundup of the latest craziness:

Gaetz's slam on Ryan was one of the tamer things he said in Georgia Thursday night. One comment that got a lot of reaction on Twitter was when he told the crowd that they have "an obligation" to use the Second Amendment against Big Tech.

But it's tough to out-crazy Greene, especially on her home turf. From the "really bad Mexican accent" she mockingly brought out to discuss border issues to explicitly comparing Democrats to Nazis, she was on a roll. All the nuttiness just seems to make her more popular with her base. CNN's Donie O'Sullivan even interviewed one rally attendee who compared Greene to Jesus Christ

Two Trump fans unfurled a giant banner declaring "TRUMP WON" at a Yankees game, with a predictable response from the Bronx crowd.

Jimmy Kimmel called the former president "a crazy old man shouting at pigeons."

A new poll found that 3 out of 4 Republicans apparently believe that left-wing protestors are to blame for the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

And, finally, a Boston man was spotted driving a moped the wrong way on the highway, and two local sports radio hosts provided a play-by-play as the cops pursued and finally apprehended him. The man was arrested and taken to the hospital for evaluation

Chief Cicada Correspondent

On Thursday, CNN’s Manu Raju was preparing go live from the Capitol ahead of a Senate vote on whether to investigate the January 6 riot there when, suddenly, an intruder of another kind entered the frame.

A cicada, part of the brood that is currently at the point in its 17-year-cycle where they emerge from underground, had landed on Raju's shoulder and startled him, leading to a hilarious video segment that Raju himself posted on Twitter of him absolutely freaking the heck out as the large bug crawled up his neck.

Raju's fellow journalists reacted with horror and sympathy on Twitter, dubbing him CNN's "Chief Cicada Correspondent."
