Your Monday evening update from the Lancashire Post

During the pandemic, we have all realised just how important access to free healthcare is - and hopefully we have come to appreciate those who help to provide it a little more. But there is no doubt that it is under pressure, with millions now waiting for treatment which has been delayed because of the impacts of Covid-19. It is not helped by people who really do not need hospital treatment insisting on heading for A&E all the time. Now a pilot scheme in another part of the country in which every patient is met by a GP and a nurse at the doors to casualty and assessed before they enter, is being hailed as one of the ways we can relieve that pressure and save money. During the pilot, one person went to A&E asking for Calpol and others for muscular injuries they had had for days. They were offered a GP or pharmacy advice or appointment and taken away from hospital care. It may seem extreme, but if we want emergency care to be there for when it really is an emergency, radical changes are needed.
