| Queen urges people to get vaccinated |
| |
| | | The Queen has spoken about getting the coronavirus vaccine, saying she has since felt "protected". In a video call with NHS leaders, she acknowledged getting vaccinated might be "difficult" for some who are unused to it but urged everyone to "think about other people rather than themselves". The monarch, 94, and her husband the Duke of Edinburgh, 99, received their first doses of the vaccine in January. Her verdict: "It didn't hurt at all."
UK vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi says figures indicates 11-15% of people are vaccine-hesitant. Data suggests take-up is lower among some black and ethnic minority communities, while some studies have found wealth-related disparities. And Dr Emily Lawson, who leads the vaccine deployment programme for the NHS in England, said the Queen's comments about her vaccine experience were an "incredibly important vote of confidence in the programme".

| Salmond to appear at Holyrood inquiry |
| |
| |
| Alex Salmond is to be questioned later by MSPs examining the Scottish government's mishandling of sexual harassment complaints about him. The former first minister claims a "malicious and concerted" conspiracy, for which successor Nicola Sturgeon says there's "not a shred of evidence". The Holyrood inquiry was set up after the government admitted its investigation of complaints against Mr Salmond had been "procedurally unfair" and "tainted by apparent bias". A judicial review awarded him more than £500,000 in expenses and he was later acquitted of sexual assault at the High Court. How did the former allies end up at loggerheads? BBC Scotland's Glenn Campbell explains. | |

| US strikes Iran-backed militias in Syria |
| |
| |
| US airstrikes targeting Iranian-backed militias in Syria have destroyed multiple facilities at a border control point, the Pentagon says. President Joe Biden approved the action in response to recent attacks against US and coalition personnel in Iraq. A civilian contractor was killed, while one US service member and five other contractors were injured in rocket strikes on Irbil. US bases in Baghdad have also been attacked. The Pentagon says the retaliation sends "an unambiguous message. President Biden will act to protect American and coalition personnel". The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the US strikes killed at least 17 pro-Iranian fighters, destroying three munitions lorries. | |

| | | | | The enormous beef between Australia's government and Facebook has persuaded a lot of people that we are entering a new era of technology regulation. In policy and news conferences from Palo Alto to Perth, mostly conducted on Zoom of course, heavy chat about regulation and chin-stroking reliably go together.
But as is often the way with complex areas of policy, the word "regulation" has now been so used and abused as to have lost all precision in meaning. A dose of accuracy, and realism, is overdue.
