Dear Garden Grower, Eat your greens. You’ve heard it since you were a kid, no doubt. Maybe you’ve said it to your kids. But now when you sit down at the dinner table, you may soon be telling the kids to eat their purples. Purple and purple-splashed vegetables are showing up more and more in supermarkets, farmers’ markets, salad bars, and maybe even your garden. Purple potatoes, kale, lettuce, Asian greens, and asparagus are appearing alongside the familiar purple plums, grapes, and blueberries. Seed catalogs offer dozens of purple vegetables. And they do, admittedly, bring some visual bling to the garden. While they may expand the color palette on your dinner table, do they offer any nutritional value? “Hundreds of studies over the past 30 years or more have shown that anthocyanin-rich [purple-pigmented] foods reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, metabolic diseases, and other chronic diseases,” according to Dr. Colin Kay, a nutritional biologist. Plants produce anthocyanins to attract pollinators and seed dispersers, repel predators, resist pathogens, heal wounds, and reduce stress from environmental factors such as excess radiation or cold temperatures. So, how much purple food do we need to eat to repel predators and lower our heating bill? It’s hard to say. What we do know is that the benefits increase as you eat more. This doesn’t mean that you have to consume megadoses of blueberries or red cabbage. “Some studies [have found] that small amounts are used very efficiently where the body needs them,” says Dr. Monica Giusti, a professor at Ohio State. Sure, they’re good for you, but let’s answer the real question, shall we? Will they work in the garden? How do they taste? To find out the answers to these questions and learn more about the history of purple vegetables, check out The Old Farmer’s Almanac Garden Guide Online Library, which comes with your membership in The Old Farmer’s Almanac Gardening Club. This is the same almanac that farmers, gardeners, homesteaders, and other smart people have relied upon for over two centuries. |

Strawberry Fields (and Recipes) Forever | Purple vegetables can taste mighty good, but the sweet taste of those first strawberries of the season is absolutely heaven on Earth. There’s nothing like the joy of picking and eating a fresh strawberry. Try as we might, though, we can’t eat them all in one sitting. That’s why we are thrilled to have three prizewinning strawberry recipes in The Old Farmer’s Almanac Garden Guide Online Library. Let’s be honest here. Doesn’t a Strawberry Honey Basil Bite sound divine right about now? You simply can’t go wrong. And when you add in the goat cheese and serve it on a puff pastry? Wow! Although, to be fair, the Strawberry Mango Salsa and the Roasted Strawberry Basil Balsamic Salad make our mouths water, too. Seriously. You’re making a balsamic vinaigrette with roasted strawberries. That’s going to be good on almost anything. If you need us, we’ll be out picking strawberries! | | Perfect Peppers | Know what else works well in salads, sauces, and main dishes? Peppers. They aren’t hard to grow, either. Peppers need about 8 hours of direct sunlight and well-draining, phosphorus-rich soil that’s high in organic matter. Try snack-size red, orange, and yellow mini bell peppers, the mild ‘Takara’ hybrid, or the heirloom ‘California Wonder’, or go (cautiously) all out with the very hot ‘Ghost Pepper’. Whether it’s peppers or purples, if gardens are your thing, you can get a full harvest of tips, ideas, news, and inspiration in The Old Farmer’s Almanac Garden Guide Online Library. Those strawberry recipes alone are enough to make for the best reading this side of Henry David Thoreau. Access to The Old Farmer’s Almanac Garden Guide Online Library is yours, along with much more useful information, wit, and wisdom, with an Old Farmer’s Almanac Gardening Club Charter Membership! |

This compact calendar is the perfect size to fit on the wall in your kitchen, den, or potting shed. Each month features rich, full-color illustrations along with tips, history, or background information on the artwork. Here are just a few of the types of tips you can find in our 2021 Gardening Calendar: Reinvigorate your houseplants by removing the top 1/4 inch of soil and top-dressing with fresh potting soil. Use an old salt shaker for sowing tiny seeds. Mix the seeds with sand for better spreading. Plants with a strong citrus fragrance will help to keep pesky bugs at bay. Try planting lemon-scented geraniums, lemon thyme, or lemon balm. Lettuce shaded naturally or by shade cloth will encourage the growth of a tender, sweet crop all summer. To attract dragonflies, create a water feature. Choose a spot in partial to full sun and plant a few native plants along the edges for wind protection. Remove the lower leaves of brussels sprouts to expose the buds along the stem. Harvest from the bottom up. Fill bird feeders to attract chickadees, nuthatches, and juncos—they will not only brighten the landscape but also clean up insect larvae and eggs on trees and shrubs. You’ll love the advice, folklore, and gardening secrets in our 2021 Gardening Wall Calendar!
