EDITOR'S NOTEBOOK
Sometimes, you get the idea for the story and immediately know the perfect writer. Then you cross your fingers and hope she says yes.
The editorial team had been discussing the idea of putting together a night-themed travel issue for a while. It was about time we catered to the night owls in our readership, who perhaps were simply rolling over and going back to sleep rather than planning adventures inspired by our more usual travel tips for picture-perfect sunrises, morning hikes, birding tours, and brunches.
How about star-gazing and night walks? How about a guide to partying all night? In Montreal! The city that never sleeps and with a joie de vivre the rest of Canada can only regard with envy. We immediately thought of novelist Heather O’Neill, a Montreal booster extraordinaire with a quirky sense of humour and encyclopedic knowledge of her hometown.
I emailed her, asking how she felt about pulling an all-nighter with her daughter, illustrator Arizona O’Neill. It’ll be fun, I said. A mother-daughter Nuit Blanche adventure, experiencing Montreal’s annual all-night celebration of all things art. Write about whatever inspires you; illustrate whatever grabs you. Heather’s answer came swiftly: “We are totally down. Sounds fun!”
The resulting article speaks for itself. It’s signature Heather O’Neill—irreverent and hilarious, her love for Montreal shining through in every sentence. Arizona O’Neill’s illustrations capture the wacky adventure perfectly, the weird and wonderful exhibitions flowing across the pages in dreamy watercolour.
I know the creatures — I mean readers — of the night will enjoy this family collaboration as much as we enjoyed putting it together.
