The state of publisher-platform relations According to a new member-exclusive report by Digiday Research, barely half of publishers posting content to platforms say they’re happy with any of their platform partners, and many say the ROI on some key platforms is getting worse rather than better. Of the 135 publishers surveyed by Digiday in a wide-ranging research survey this fall: Large publishers said they rely more heavily on platforms for content distribution than smaller ones. Facebook, Instagram and Google AMP remain the preferred distribution platforms, while AMP and Facebook provide the greatest monetization. More than 50% of publishers reported that direct-sold advertising was a large or very large source of their revenue. Video advertising is another bright spot, with 28% of publishers reporting it as a large or very large source of revenue, as were programmatic ads, with 35%. This new report investigates how publishers are using platforms and makes recommendations for how they can evolve their platform strategies heading into 2020.
