Good afternoon! It's Wednesday, August 30, and today's headlines include research on churchgoers and abortion, a guilty verdict for pro-life activists in Washington, D.C., and a former UMC congregation that is facing the loss of its building.

New research from the Family Research Council's Center for Biblical Worldview shows that one out of every six churchgoers in the U.S. has had, paid for or encouraged an abortion. The findings showed that 65% of respondents agree that the Bible identifies when human life begins, while 21% disagree, and 14% do not know. The study also asked respondents what they believe the Bible teaches about abortion and when it is permissible. Full Story.

Five pro-life activists, including Lauren Handy of the Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising, have been found guilty of violating federal law in connection with a 2020 blockade of a Washington, D.C., abortion facility. All of the defendants were taken into custody following the verdict; another group of activists is set to be tried for their involvement with the same blockade. Handy made headlines in 2022 for recovering the remains of
five full-term babies alongside 110 other human remains from the facility at the center of the trial. Read more.

Oakdale Church of Olney, Md., has only a few weeks remaining to raise $4 million to keep their property or they will lose their church building. The congregation, which voted to disaffiliate from the United Methodist Church in April, is required to pay the UMC mission shares, any unfunded pension liability and 50% of the property's assessed value, totaling approximately $4 million. St. John's Institutional Missionary Baptist Church in Miami, Fla., is facing the foreclosure of several of its buildings after a former pastor allegedly mishandled the historic church's finances. A GoFundMe campaign has raised around $13,000 of the $3 million goal to cover the debt racked up by former pastor Bishop James D. Adams before Sept. 11 to avoid Taylor Made Lending auctioning the church's properties. Read more.
