Pride in the CLE

It’s been three years since Cleveland’s Pride march and festival last took place in-person, but it’s returned for June 4, and it’s bigger than ever with a larger venue (downtown Cleveland’s Malls B and C) with increased accessibility. Check out live performances, a health and wellness village, a Speakout stage and other programming downtown on Saturday, courtesy of the LGBT Community Center of Greater Cleveland. Free. Cleveland Orchestra’s MLK Celebration Concert

Delayed from its traditional date in January due to the pandemic, the Cleveland Orchestra's MLK Celebration Concert will finally take place this Saturday. Associate conductor Vinay Parameswaran will lead the program, which will also feature soprano Jacqueline Echols, narrator Tony Sias and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Chorus. Modest Mouse at Jacobs Pavilion

Indie-rock icons Modest Mouse will celebrate its latest album release, 2021′s “The Golden Casket,” with a Jacobs Pavilion show on Sunday night. The Cribs open. Tickets $39+. 2014 Sycamore St., Cleveland. 8 p.m., June 5. DETAILS

 

Hari Kondabalu at Hilarities

Acclaimed standup comic Hari Kondabalu will headline at Hilarities this weekend. In addition to his Netflix special “Warn Your Relatives,” Kondabalu is known for his documentary “The Problem with Apu” and his appearances on podcasts like “Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me.” Tickets $40 (for a pair). 2035 E. 4th St., Cleveland. Cleveland International Classical Guitar Festival

The Cleveland Institute of Music will host six concerts by acclaimed classical guitarists this weekend as a part of the Cleveland International Classical Guitar Festival. Drew Henderson, the Davin-Levin Duo, Duo Melis, the Patterson-Sutton Duo and Petra Poláčková are just some of the performers slated for the 22nd annual event. Cedar Point’s Frontier Festival

The amusement park’s annual celebration of hope, health and harvest returns in the form of a street festival through Frontier Town. Highlights include a cherry-themed special menu, craft beer, live music, fun games and local artisans and crafters selling their one-of-a-kind wares. 'We Want Everything' at Cleveland Institute of Art

Grab your bullhorn and get ready to march: With apologies to Gil Scott Heron, the revolution isn’t being televised at the Cleveland Institute of Art; it’s rolling off a printing press. “We Want Everything,’’ an immersive visual onslaught of radical, left-leaning posters, banners, and covers for zines, LP albums, and books, is on view in its final days through Friday, June 10 in the art college’s Reinberger Gallery in University Circle, and it’s well worth a visit. 'Waitress' at Hanna Theatre

This Broadway smash returns to Cleveland, this time in a more intimate setting at the Hanna Theatre. The musical, which tells the inspiring story of a struggling waitress looking to turn her life around via a pie baking contest, features a score by Grammy winner and Tony nominee Sara Bareilles. 'My Fair Lady' at State Theatre

Long before she fully understood why or ended up playing the role herself, actress Shereen Ahmed was drawn to Eliza Doolittle. While others dreamed of being princesses, she felt a connection to a strong female character who isn’t looking for a husband and doesn’t need rescuing, whose only goal in fact is a higher station. “It was a dream come true, watching it,” recalled Ahmed, a native of Baltimore and star of the touring production of “My Fair Lady” headed to the State Theatre at Playhouse Square June 7-26. Art in the Village

Legacy Village will host its annual juried art festival, featuring nearly 100 artists in one location, plus a craft market with more vendors stationed there. Live music is scheduled both days, featuring acts like Cats on Holiday, Justo and Havana Nights, Lea Marra & The Dreamcatchers and Swamp Boogie Band. Little Italy Summer Art Walk

Cleveland’s vibrant Little Italy neighborhood will host its annual Art Walk event this weekend, showcasing local artists in the historic district. Free. Little Italy, Cleveland. 5-9 p.m. June 3; Noon-9 p.m. June 4; Noon-5 p.m. June 5. DETAILS

 

Cleveland Bazaar

The Beatles: Get Back to Let It Be
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s newest exhibit celebrates the legacy of the Fab Four with film clips, audio, custom projections, original instruments, clothing and handwritten lyrics. Artifacts include John Lennon’s iconic wire-rimmed glasses, a black and gray shirt worn by Paul McCartney in the recording studio, Ringo Starr’s maple Ludwig drum kit and more. Tickets, $20-$30. The folks who brought us Market Garden Brewery are transforming their spaces across the street - Bier Markt, Bar Cento and Speakeasy – into two new, vibrant locations in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood: Bright Side is set to open next week, and Bird of Paradise will follow. Check out a brewery in Canton

As the weather gets warmer it’s a perfect time for a drive to check out a local craft brewery and sip some suds. Muskellunge Brewing Co. is approaching its fourth anniversary, and if you make it there you might as well check out Canton Brewing Co., about four blocks away. Cheers! ‘Fire Island’

Screenwriter and comedian Joel Kim Booster looked to Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" as the inspiration for his modern romantic comedy "Fire Island," coming to Hulu on Friday. Under Andrew Ahn's direction, Booster also stars as the main character Noah who is setting off for an annual weeklong reunion trip with some friends, including "Saturday Night Live's" Bowen Yang, to the iconic LGBTQ vacation spot. Yang plays the part of the insecure Howie, and Noah, who avoids relationships, makes it his mission to find him a hook up. Margaret Cho is in the mix, too, as the woman who owns the house they've stayed at for years. Reviews have called it an instant gay classic. DETAILS

‘Interceptor’

Over on Netflix, "Fast & Furious" alum Elsa Pataky (who is also famously married to Chris Hemsworth) leads her own action pic with "Interceptor," which debuts on Friday. She plays a military officer who has been relegated to a base in the middle of the Pacific Ocean to look after a single missile interceptor. It's a boring gig until a former intelligence officer played by Luke Bracey threatens the base and she's the only one there to defend it. Hemsworth not only produced, but also helped Pataky train for the role as well. DETAILS

 

Judy Garland centennial

For some real classics, head over to The Criterion Channel this week. They're celebrating Judy Garland's centennial (she would have been 100 on June 10) with 12 MGM films that defined her early career. They include Busby Berkeley's "Babes in Arms" (1939) and "For Me and My Gal" (1942); Vincente Minnelli's "Meet Me in St. Louis" (1944), "The Clock" (1945) and "The Pirate" (1948); Robert Z. Leonard's "Ziegfeld Girl" (1941) and "In the Good Old Summertime" (1949); George Sidney's "The Harvey Girls" (1946); Norman Taurog's "Girl Crazy" (1943) and "Presenting Lily Mars" (1943); and Charles Walters' "Easter Parade" (1948) and "Summer Stock" (1950). ‘This is Going to Hurt’

Ben Whishaw ("A Very English Scandal") stars in "This is Going to Hurt," a comedy-drama based on the 2017 best-selling memoir of the same name by Adam Kay. The setting is a gynecology and obstetrics ward, where Whishaw's over-stressed, under-paid Dr. Kay faces nearly 100-hour weeks, decisions that could save a life or lose it, and a tenuous grip on the scant personal time left. The limited series, created by British doctor-turned-comedy-writer Kay, debuts Thursday, on AMC+ and Sundance Now, with new episodes out weekly. DETAILS

 

MTV Movie & TV Awards

The MTV Movie & TV Awards is billed as an "epic, global one-night event." Be that as it may, the Sunday ceremony will be easy to find. Besides playing internationally on MTV, it will be simulcast by a vast contingent of corporate siblings including BET, CMT, Comedy Central and Paramount Network. Vanessa Hudgens is the host, with top nominees including "Spider-Man: No Way Home," "Euphoria" and "The Batman." "Inventing Anna," "Moon Knight" and "Pam & Tommy" are among the other contenders, with new categories including best song and this novel entry: Here for the Hookup. DETAILS

 

‘Physical’

Season two of this dark comedy finds Sheila Rubin (Rose Byrne) in a new place in her life after the successful launch of her first aerobics video. Torn between her husband Danny (Rory Scovel) and an attraction to someone else, she must also deal with new competitors who could spoil her dream of building a fitness empire. Premieres Friday, June 3, on Apple TV+ DETAILS

 

‘Ms. Marvel’

Marvel introduces its first Muslim superhero in this original series with teen comedy vibes. Iman Vellani plays a Jersey City high school student who’s into video games and superheroes, particularly Captain Marvel. She feels like an outsider at school and at home until a cosmic event gives her superpowers of her own. Premieres Wednesday, June 8, on Disney+. DETAILS

Miranda Lambert & Little Big Town at Blossom Music Center

Miranda Lambert is arguably country music’s biggest female solo star of the past 15 years. And Little Big Town is one of Nashville’s biggest bands. They are joining forces for one of the premier country tours of the summer, stopping June 4 at Blossom Music Center. Lambert is coming off yet another critically acclaimed album with “Palomino” released in April. The video for “If I Was a Cowboy” was one of the most played clips in country music over the past year. And it looks like her tour with Little Big Town could contain a few special moments. During the recent kickoff show, Lambert joined LBT for a rendition of The Judds’ “Grandpa (Tell Me ‘Bout the Good Old Days)” to honor the late Naomi Judd. DETAILS

Post Malone

Post Malone returns Friday with "Twelve Carat Toothache," a follow up to his 2019 album, "Hollywood's Bleeding.” It includes his new single with The Weeknd, "One Right Now," which peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Other guests expected are Kid Laroi, Doja Cat, Roddy Ricch and Fleet Foxes' Robin Pecknold. Post Malone told Billboard the album is about "the ups and downs and the disarray and the bipolar aspect of being an artist in the mainstream." DETAILS

 

Prince and the Revolution

A high-energy concert by Prince and the Revolution in upstate New York held more than three decades ago has been reworked and re-released on video and audio. The March 30, 1985, concert at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York, included the songs "Delirious," "1999," "Little Red Corvette," "Take Me Home," "Let's Pretend We're Married," "Computer Blue," "When Doves Cry" and "I Would Die 4 U," among others. "Prince and The Revolution: Live" will be released Friday. DETAILS

 

Halsey

Halsey has waited more than two years to celebrate her last two albums. Her 2020 “Manic Would Tour” was scrapped after just 17 shows due to the pandemic. And any celebration of her critically acclaimed 2021 release “If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power” (produced by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross) was also put on hold. The ambitious pop star finally hits the road again with a much-anticipated June 3 show at Blossom Music Center. DETAILS

 

Flume

Australian electronic artist Flume is capable of headlining some of the largest music festivals in the world. But on June 3, Northeast Ohio fans will get a more intimate experience June 3 at Jacobs Pavilion just weeks after the release of Flume’s latest album “Palaces” on May 20. DETAILS

 

Pup at House of Blues

Punk-rock band Pup will headline at the House of Blues this weekend, bringing a high-energy show in support of the band’s excellent new album “The Unraveling of Puptheband.” Oceanator and Angel Du$t are scheduled to open. Tickets $25+. 308 Euclid Ave., Cleveland.  8 p.m. June 3. DETAILS 

 

Drive-By Truckers

Drive-By Truckers look back on their new album, "Welcome 2 Club XIII," due out Friday. Songs about the bandmembers' formative years follows on the heels of their 2020 albums "The Unraveling" and "The New OK." One single, "The Driver," is about being behind the wheel of a car at night with a little practical advice thrown in: "When you're changing lanes/and passing on the right/check your blind spot/and signal your intent." The new album gets its title from a music venue where founding members Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley performed at the start of their careers. DETAILS
