| Pressure on PM despite cabinet support |
| |
| | | | |
In the House of Commons on Wednesday, Boris Johnson admitted attending a drinks party in Downing Street last May - when the country was in lockdown - for 25 minutes. He said he thought the gathering was a work event - but he apologised and accepted that, "in hindsight", he should have sent everyone back inside. But that has not satisfied all of his Conservative colleagues.
At least four MPs - including the leader of the Scottish Conservatives, Douglas Ross - have called for him to go. "He is the prime minister, it is his government that put these rules in place, and he has to be held to account for his actions," said Mr Ross. But other senior Tories have backed the PM.
Foreign Secretary Liz Truss tweeted that she was behind Mr Johnson "100%". Rishi Sunak - another tipped as the next PM - said Mr Johnson was right to apologise, and that he "supported his request for patience" while an inquiry takes place. Meanwhile, Commons leader Jacob Rees-Mogg dismissed Mr Ross as a "lightweight figure".
Our political editor Laura Kuenssberg says Mr Johnson’s apology on Wednesday has probably bought him "a little time". But one minister tells her: "It’s over." Read the full analysis here.

| Djokovic remains in Australian Open draw |
| |
| |
| Novak Djokovic remains in the Australian Open draw as the decision over whether the defending champion can stay in the country drags on. The 34-year-old has been drawn against fellow Serb Miomir Kecmanovic in the first round. The draw was supposed to be announced at 3pm local time (04:00 GMT) on Thursday but was delayed by 45 minutes without reason. At a news conference, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said he did not want to comment on Djokovic's visa status - and that it was up to the immigration minister to decide whether to revoke it or not. | |

| | | | | It couldn't have been a worse result for Prince Andrew.
Just weeks ago, speculation was mounting that his team might have come up with a slam-dunk winner that would stop this case in its tracks.
But, using another American sporting metaphor, Wednesday's result shows it had all been a bit of a Hail Mary: a desperate last-minute shot at goal that was doomed to fail.
In 46 pages, Judge Lewis Kaplan not only dismissed the attempts to stop Virginia Giuffre's civil damages claim against the Duke of York, he also underlined that many of the arguments had been worthless.

|
| | | | After a busy day for news, all the papers lead on the future of the prime minister – although Prince Andrew’s failure to have the civil case against him thrown out also gets plenty of space. The Guardian says Boris Johnson’s future is “on a knife-edge”; the Daily Mail says it’s “Operation Save Boris”; and the Telegraph says Chancellor Rishi Sunak has “declined to fully endorse” the PM. | A woman in China went to a man's house on a blind date - and ended up having to stay for several days after his community went into a Covid lockdown. The woman's date cooked every day but "didn't speak much", she reported. Meanwhile, in football's African Cup of Nations, a referee blew early for full-time not once - but twice. | |
