‘A Cosmic Breath: a virtual Festival with real Musicians’

Florence, Italy | July 19-26 2020

The curtain opens for the 21st season of the international Italian Brass Week festival which will take place entirely online, from July 19th to 26th, 2020. The control room will be based in Florence at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and will be led by Maestro Luca Benucci, first horn, artistic director of the Orchestra of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, and Professor of Music at the Fiesole School of Music and of the Conservatory of Music 'C. Monteverdi 'of Bolzano.

The platform used for master classes and concerts will be Zoom in addition to the festival's social channels: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Youtube.

The Festival is organized in partnership with the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, ANBIMA, the institutions of the Municipality of Florence, the Metropolitan City of Florence and the Tuscany Region, the Embassies of Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Belgium, Canada, the Spain, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Switzerland, the Federal Republic of Germany, the Czech Republic, the Russian Federal Republic, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Sweden- based in Rome, the Honorary Consulate of the United States, the Honorary Consulate of Sweden, the Honorary Consulate of France and the Honorary Consulate of Hungary - based in Florence, the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany - based in Milan, the Honorary Consulate of the Russian Federation - based in Pisa, as well as the Polish Institute of Rome, the Fundamusical Simón Bolívar, the International Women's Brass Conference, the Spanish Association of Tubas and Eupnoiums, and the International Trombone Association.

Every corner of the world will speak Italian Brass Week; each of the 90 world stars will open their home to let out that vital breath, that 'Cosmic Breath' that will reach thousands, millions of young people and music lovers. The Godfather of Italian Brass Week 2020 is Maestro Zubin Mehta.

The new season is entitled 'A Cosmic Breath: a virtual Festival with real Musicians'.

The fulcrum of the week will be Air in all its facets. Air is one of the four elements of nature, as intangible as music. It is the invisible energy that we breathe, it is the vital breath, the cosmic breath, the universal soul. It is the element synonymous with fantasy, imagination, spirituality. And it is in the multiple meanings of Air, in this Cosmic Breath, that our Festival will take place, because the air is vibrant. As the great German composer Johannes Brahms said "there are so many melodies that wander in the air that I must be careful not to step on them. "

Like any previous season of the Festival, the days of the week will be marked by the Masterclasses. This year they will be open to all with no limit on the number of participants and free of charge. All you need is a good connection and a smartphone, Iphone, Ipad, pc, etc.

For each day we will have 8 teachers - teachers, orchestra professors and international soloists - who, in the time slot 8:30-12:30 and 15:30-18:30 (Italian time) - will give their lessons to the world of Brass and to all fans. They will educate the generations to Beauty with a mode unusual but necessary that is capable of keeping us united despite the planetary health emergency.

Between the two sessions of the masterclasses there will be streaming concerts, talk shows, meetings and happenings in which 20 Brass Ensembles from all over the world will take part, as well as art experts, chefs and sommeliers on the international level. A few such masters of their craft are Dr. Antonella Lombardi for heritage artistic-cultural, the international chef 'showman at the Panzano in Chianti' Dario Cecchini, the cook of Rai Uno, writer Luisanna Messeri for the food and wine, and Paola Mencarelli journalist and director of the Florence Cocktail Week.

The 2020 Festival has a mission that is based on three pillars: 'Wings to Talent', 'Italian Brass Week for Youth' and 'Music to People'. These pillars make themselves the mouthpieces of Beauty, Fantasy, Internationality, Talent, Ingenuity and Passion .

The season of 'Wings to Talent' this year will be online and will not follow the model of the international competition as the previous seasons in attendance but, on the final day of the Festival, the best young Italian musicians and professionals, winners of the previous International competitions of our Festival, rewarded with the scholarships offered by ANBIMA, will present themselves to the general public and perform selected songs in order to put their talents on display.

We will consolidate our mission, giving wings to young musical promises and enhancing and increasing collaboration with prestigious educational institutions and organizations, such as El Sistema Abreu in Venezuela, the Ensemble Nifo Band from Gambia in Africa, in order to guarantee a widespread and capillary formation with free access for all. An extended mission: 'Italian Brass Week for Youth'. We believe, as already argued by José Antonio Abreu, that music education is a way of organizing and developing the community. We have a social responsibility to professionalise young people by transferring the millennial knowledge that Music has, that cosmic integration that applies to all of Life. It is thanks to this mission that we have received the Bronze Medal from the President of the Republic of Italy.

And finally, 'Music to People'. Every day we will host many Brass ensembles connected with us from the five continents as well as electronic music. There will be two afternoon appointments, marked at 2:30 pm and 2:45 pm (Italian time), three evening appointments, divided between 9:00 pm, 9:45 pm and 10:30 pm (Italian time). The closing of each evening will be brought about by the performance of electronic and brass music curated by the producer and sound designer Alberto Tucci of 'Elastica Records', an historic independent record label which, from Chianti is, to date, the reference point of the international electronic scene.

The Main Show will also be in the air, the hot air of the Montgolfier brothers' balloon, to bring the Brass of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino up to the skies of Florence for the final day of the Festival. On board the aerostatic globe, which gives homage to Florence in a goodbye to 2021, we will retrace the enterprise of Giovanni Luder, the first in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany to take off on July 16, 1795 in the skies of the city of Giglio, to be promoted by the Grand Duke Ferdinando III 'royal fountain', and to obtain 24 gold sequins. Like Luder, the Ottoni of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino "will rise in the air and confide in the winds", joining the cosmic breath of the universe with their energy, the soul of the Italian Brass Week.

Francesco Traversi's pen - award-winning with Bronze, Silver and Gold Medals at the Global Music Awards in Los Angeles as Best Composer and Best contemporary composer of classical music in 2014, 2016 and 2018 - will autograph the score of our world premiere. The soundtrack of the Main Show will be the famous romance of Prince Calaf from Turandot by the Tuscan composer Giacomo Puccini, Nessun dorma. The air of the unknown Prince will reach those stars trembling with hope that will give way to the light of dawn. From the darkness of the emergency of the Covid-19 pandemic we will return to the light and "at dawn I will win!".

La nuova edizione ha titolo ‘A Cosmic Breath: a virtual Festival with real Musicians’.

Fulcro della settimana sarà l’Aria in tutte le sue sfaccettature. L’Aria è uno dei quattro elementi vitali della natura, intangibile come la musica. È l’invisibile energia che respiriamo, è il respiro vitale, il respiro cosmico, l’anima universale. È l’elemento sinonimo di fantasia, immaginazione, spiritualità. Ed è nelle molteplici accezioni dell’Aria, in questo Cosmic Breath, che si realizzerà il nostro Festival, perché l’aria è vibrante, come diceva il grande compositore tedesco Johannes Brahms «ci sono tante melodie che vagano nell’aria che devo far attenzione a non calpestarle».

Come ogni precedente edizione del Festival, le giornate della settimana saranno scandite dalle Masterclass. Quest’anno saranno aperte a tutti, senza limiti di numero di partecipanti, e gratuite. Basteranno solo una buona connessione e uno smartphone, Iphone, Ipad, pc.

Per ogni giornata avremo 8 docenti – didatti, professori d’orchestra e solisti internazionali – che, nella fascia oraria 8.30-12.30 e 15.30-18.30 – doneranno le proprie lezioni al mondo dei Brass e a tutti gli appassionati, educheranno le generazioni al Bello, con una modalità, finora insolita, ma necessaria, capace di farci rimanere uniti nonostante l’emergenza sanitaria planetaria.

Tra le due sessioni delle masterclasses ci saranno concerti in streaming, talk show, meeting e happening ai quali prenderanno parte 20 Brass Ensemble del pianeta, così come esperti d’arte, chef e sommelier di livello internazionale quali la Dr. Antonella Lombardi per il patrimonio artistico-culturale, lo Chef internazionale ‘showman della ciccia’ Dario Cecchini, la cuoca di Rai Uno e scrittrice Luisanna Messeriper l’ambito enogastronomico, Paola Mencarelli giornalista e direttrice della Florence Coktail Week, solo per citarne alcuni.

Il Festival 2020 ha una mission che si fonda su tre pilastri: ‘Wings to Talent’, ‘Italian Brass Week for Youth’ e ‘Music to People’, pilastri che si fanno portavoce di Bellezza, Fantasia, Internazionalità, Talento, Ingegno e Passione.

L’edizione ‘Wings to Talent’, quest’anno sarà online e non seguirà il modello del Concorso internazionale, come per le precedenti edizioni in presenza, bensì, nella giornata conclusiva del Festival, i migliori giovani musicisti e professionisti italiani, vincitori dei precedenti Concorsi internazionali del nostro Festival, premiati con le borse di studio offerte da ANBIMA, si presenteranno al grande pubblico ed eseguiranno dei brani scelti al fine di mettere in primo piano i loro talenti.

Consolideremo, seppur online, la nostra missione, mettendo le ali alle giovani promesse musicali, valorizzando e incrementando la collaborazione con prestigiose istituzioni e organizzazioni formative, quali El Sistema Abreu nel Venezuela, l’Istituto Bacarelli di San Paolo in Brasile, l’Ensemble Nifo Band dal Gambia in Africa, al fine di garantire una formazione diffusa e capillare con accesso libero e gratuito per tutti. Una mission allargata: ‘Italian Brass Week for Youth’. Crediamo, come già sostenuto da José Antonio Abreu, che l’educazione musicale sia un modo di organizzare e sviluppare la comunità. Abbiamo la responsabilità sociale di professionalizzare i giovani, trasferendo quelle conoscenze millenarie che la Musica ha, quell’integrazione cosmica che è Vita, non solo musicale.

È grazie a questa missione che abbiamo ricevuto la Medaglia di Bronzo del Presidente della Repubblica.

E, infine, ‘Music to People’. Ogni giorno ospiteremo molte formazioni Brass connesse con noi dai cinque continenti e musica elettronica. Gli appuntamenti pomeridiani saranno due, scanditi negli orari 14.30 e 14.45, quelli serali saranno tre, suddivisi negli orari 21.00, 21.45 e 22.30. Hanno già aderito al nostro progetto ‘A Cosmic Breath’: il Quartetto di corni del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (Italia), i Russian Horns (Russia), i Bayres Horns (Argentina), BrassUka (Brasile), il Shofar Horn Quartet (Brasile), i Seraph Brass (USA), l’American Brass Quintet (USA), il Siete Quartos 7/4 Brass Ensemble (Venezuela), il Venezuelan Horn Ensemble (Venezuela), il 8 Buglers of Japan (Giappone), il Mascoulisse Quartet (Italia), i South Brass (Italia), la Nifo Band (Gambia), Son De Tikizia (Costa Rica), i Melos Brass (Grecia), l’Iran Brass Ensemble (Iran), il Quinteto de Bronces ‘Embajador’ (Guatemala), i Belgian Brass (Belgio), il Kortenhoef Brass Quintet (Paesi Bassi), l’M5 Mexican Brass (Messico), i Gomalan Brass (Italia).

La chiusura di ogni serata spetta alla perfomance di musica elettronica e Brass curata dal produttore e sound designer Alberto Tucci di ‘Elastica Records’, storica etichetta discografica indipendente che, dal Chianti è, ad oggi, il punto di riferimento della scena elettronica internazionale.

Anche per il Main Show sarà l’aria, quella calda dell’aerostato dei fratelli Montgolfier a portare in alto, nei cieli di Firenze, per la giornata conclusiva del Festival, gli Ottoni del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.. A bordo del globo aerostatico, quale omaggio a Firenze in un arrivederci al 2021, si ripercorrerà l’impresa di Giovanni Luder, il primo, nel Granducato di Toscana, a spiccare il volo in una sera d’estate – era il 16 luglio 1795 – nei cieli della città del Giglio, per esser promosso dal Granduca Ferdinando III ‘fontaniere regio’ ed ottenere ben 24 zecchini d’oro. Come Luder, gli Ottoni del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino «saliranno nell’aria e si confideranno ai venti», unendosi al respiro cosmico dell’universo con la loro energia, anima dell’Italian Brass Week.

La penna di Francesco Traversi – pluripremiato con Bronze, Silver e Gold Medals ai Global Music Awards di Los Angeles quale Miglior Compositore e Miglior compositore contemporaneo di musica classica nel 2014, 2016 e 2018 – autograferà la partitura della nostra prima mondiale assoluta. Colonna sonora del Main Show sarà la celebre romanza del Principe Calaf dalla Turandot del compositore toscano Giacomo Puccini, Nessun dorma. L’aria del Principe ignoto giungerà fino a quelle stelle che tremano di speranza che lasceranno il posto alla luce dell’alba. Dalle tenebre dell’emergenza della pandemia Covid-19 torneremo alla luce e «all’alba vincer[emo]!».
