MONDAY, JULY 22, 2024

In today's newsletter, President Biden has ended his reelection campaign, Michigan Democrats are now supporting Vice President Harris for the 2024 election and where Michigan had the most lightning.

Stepping outdoors to relax

Taking time to enjoy the great outdoors can be a great way to disconnect to the hustle of regular life to soak up the serenity Mother Nature can offer. A state park with waterfalls and recently renovated amenities might serve as the perfect spot to unwind.

The Upper Peninsula's Tahquamenon Falls State Park will reopen the Hemlock loop of the Lower Falls Modern Campground, on Friday, July 26. Reservations will open Wednesday morning at 8 a.m.

If one of your outdoor plans includes visiting Michigan's 25,000-year-old cave, you might have to put your visit on hold for a while. A wall of Bear Cave in Buchanan collapsed last week due to heavy rains, cancelling tours until further notice.

President Joe Biden drops out of the 2024 race after disastrous debate inflamed age concerns

Out of the running: President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 race for the White House on Sunday, ending his bid for reelection following a disastrous debate with Donald Trump that raised doubts about his fitness for office just four months before the election.

Michigan politicians had mixed reactions to Biden’s announcement to drop out of the 2024 race. He has since endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor. Biden plans on serving out the remainder of his term in office, which ends Jan. 20, 2025.

Up next: Michigan Democrats are showing support for Vice President Kamala Harris in the hours since President Biden announced he would be ending his reelection campaign. Democrats now must navigate a shift that is unprecedented this late in an election year.

5 takeaways from Trump’s rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan

What to know: In his first public rally since he was nearly killed in a failed assassination attempt, Donald Trump returned to Michigan on Saturday, July 20, as massive crowds flocked to see the former president speak. This marked the first campaign appearance with JD Vance, Trump's new running mate. Here are five key things to know about his visit to Grand Rapids.

Investigating: U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has appointed a bipartisan, independent panel to review this month’s assassination attempt on Trump, officials said Sunday.

More details: The man who attempted to assassinate former President Trump researched information about Ethan Crumbley and his family prior to Saturday’s shooting, according to CNN. Those details and more were released this week by the FBI and US Secret Service as investigators continue to look into what the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks was doing in the days and weeks prior to his attack.

41% of Michigan households live paycheck to paycheck. See the breakdown by town.

Not enough: An estimated 41% of Michigan households lack enough income to cover basic household expenses, according to the latest ALICE report. In 11 Michigan counties, including Wayne, it’s more than half, the report estimates. As dire as those numbers sound, Michigan is actually doing slightly better than the national average of 42% of households struggling to make ends meet, says the report.

Billion dollar question: The small Lake Michigan beach town of Bridgman lies in the shadow of one of Michigan’s two active nuclear power plants, electrifying 1.5 million homes and employing nearly 1,000 people from its perch among the Berrien County dunes. But a yearslong dispute about the plant's worth could have devastating consequences for the town, local leaders say.

New homes: A housing development of 57 single-family condominiums has received the final approvals it needed from Ann Arbor Township to move forward.

Study shows where in Michigan had the most lightning last year

Striking: All of the lightning strikes that struck Michigan last year were counted across the state by Vaisala U.S. National Lightning Detection Network. In 2023, the area from Detroit to Saginaw again had the most lightning, but more than the seven-year average. The rest of Michigan looked pretty normal on lightning flashes for 2023.

Staying safe: With recent heavy rains, the Kalamazoo River has a greater volume of water and a faster current, prompting officials to remind boaters of a few tips to ensure safety.

Garden talk: The next few months in Michigan often provide weather that some vegetable plants love. The trick is doing the simple math to figure out if these vegetables will still ripen in time. There are a few vegetables that can be planted now, thrive in July and August heat and ripen before frost.
