Predicting an end to golf’s civil war
| | There hasn’t been a more disruptive time in golf than the one we’re immersed in now, to the point that previous turbulent episodes all seem rather quaint by comparison. A ban on anchoring! A new major schedule! A Tiger Slam! These were once big deals. Yet they all took place within the parameters of a game we’ve known for decades, where the best players all gravitated toward the PGA Tour, played four rounds to arrive at a winner, and their compensation still hinged largely on shooting lower scores than others. The advent of LIV Golf has thrown all of that into question. Surely you’ve heard. The past few months have produced a steady diet of headlines about who’s leaving for the upstart circuit and who’s staying, along with a broad range of opinions about who has the upper hand. There is a lot of noise about the current dynamic in golf, but very little in the way of clarity about what it might mean. Enter this rich, insightful Golf Digest+ investigation by Joel Beall and Dan Rapaport, who spoke to dozens of people in the game in hopes of answering a simple question: Where is this all headed?
Neither Beall nor Rapaport, nor any of the central figures in this schism, can say with any certainty how this will all play out. But by diving into LIV’s origins and future model, then unpacking all the elements that have made the PGA Tour such a dominant power, we are given a clearer picture of what the golf landscape might look like in the near and distant future. The story is exclusive to Golf Digest+, but readers who haven’t yet subscribed can read a limited number of these premium stories for free each month. Beall and Rapaport’s reporting is also the basis for this week’s episode of Local Knowledge, the Golf Digest podcast that takes a deep dive into the most compelling golf stories.
In this period of unprecedented turbulence in golf, no one can predict precisely what will come next. But this ambitious story at least brings the possibilities into sharper focus.
