Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Erin Burnett

CNN’s Erin Burnett wept on Wednesday as she interviewed a Ukrainian man whose wife and children were killed last week by a Russian mortar attack.

Serhiy Perebyinis found out his wife Titiana and children Mykta and Alisa were killed in Irpin on March 9 after he saw their bodies online. Photographer Lynsey Addario watched on as a mortar struck four civilians who had attempted to cross a bridge into Kyiv.

Addario's photo went viral, and Perebyinis told the New York Times he saw the image on Twitter and knew he had lost his family. He joined Burnett on OutFront to talk about that horror.

“I’m so deeply sorry for your unbearable loss,” Burnett told Perebyinis.

She asked about whether he's been able to bury his family, and he talked about that. She asked for him to discuss his final conversation with his wife, and he recounted it.

His explanation of the conditions in the city, a desperate situation for those attempting to leave.

She asked about his children and began to cry.

"I saw a photo on Twitter and I recognized my children. I recognized their things and their clothes," he said, describing the horrible moment. "I called my friends to say the children are dead. Their bodies are lying on pavement."

Perebyinis talked about his family, about the loss. He had cheerful children, happy. A loving wife, a businesswoman who loved to plant flowers. They'd renewed their vows.

His family, that loving family now lost, Perebyinis vowed to remain in Ukraine “until the end."

It was powerful. Heartbreaking. Personal.

“Serhiy, thank you so, so much for speaking with me and for sharing this, such deeply personal loss,” Burnett concluded as she wiped away tears. “Thank you.”

Burnett didn't just interview, she listened. She felt the pain of loss and handled it all expertly. Very well done.

MEDIA LOSER:
Candace Owens

Candace Owens told viewers of her Daily Wire show that “Ukraine wasn’t a thing until 1989” and implied there’s no such thing as the Ukrainian language.

Owens, read a “mean tweet” directed at her last week in response to a comment she made about Afghanistan, Russia, and U.S. energy policy. A Twitter user chided her and said  Vladimir Putin is engaged in “genocidal colonization” in Ukraine.

Owens responded by dismissing the idea that Ukraine is historically distinct from Russia.

Owens said accusations of genocide make "no sense" because "there is no difference, ethnically, from Ukrainians and Russians, obviously," and added the wildly wrong claim that "Ukraine wasn’t a thing until 1989. Ukraine was created by the Russians."

Ukraine has actually been “a thing” for centuries. It was once under the control of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 17th century. Russia took a portion of Ukraine upon the conclusion of the Russo-Polish War in the 1660s. The country briefly gained independence in 1917 during the Russian Revolution. However, a war between Poland and the Soviets ultimately resulted in most of Ukraine becoming a Soviet Socialist Republic, with the rest going to Poland. Ukraine finally became independent again when the U.S.S.R. dissolved in 1991.

And while it’s true many Ukrainians speak Russian, Ukrainians do have their own language – Ukrainian.

Moreover, whatever cultural or historic similarities there are between the two countries, given their response to the Russian invasion, it’s clear that Ukrainians have no intention of quietly allowing themselves to be brought under Russian control of influence.

Owens has been making increasingly absurd claims about Ukraine, doubling and tripling down on her embrace of Putin propaganda. To what end we can't guess, but if she was hoping to score the Media Loser title with this mess, well: mission accomplished.

The A-Block

Worst what in the world?

Keith Olbermann reportedly lobbied hard for another stint at MSNBC in recent years and wanted to return to the network at the expense of Chris Hayes.

The Daily Beast reported earlier this week that Olbermann politicked for a gig filling in for Rachel Maddow during her hiatus. She used her veto power to keep him away.

The far-left Twitter personality appeared to confirm the report on Twitter, by way of an Elmo gif.

Now Dylan Byers has reported that Olbermann had also hit up NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell for Chris Hayes' spot, which Keith said was dragging down MSNBC in primetime.

Olbermann reportedly said, “Your 8 p.m. show is dying of thirst during a flood.”

Oh there's more. Don Lemon's name even came up.

Jimmy Kimmel is not buying Donald Trump’s change of tune when it comes to his opinion of Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

On Wednesday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, the host pointed out that while several prominent Democrats and high-ranking Biden officials were being sanctioned by Russia, Trump was missing from that list.

Kimmel first highlighted how the sanctions President Joe Biden imposed on Russia have impacted the country, then moved to Putin's revenge sanctions.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has imposed sanctions on a number of prominent Americans, including Joe Biden, Jen Psaki, Hillary Clinton – and even Joe Biden’s son, Hunter,” Kimmel added.

“You know who’s name is not on the list? The guy who was tougher than anyone on Russia!

I think you see where this is going.
