Wednesday was a quiet one at the LSU football complex. A day off from the heat of practice, one of what coach Brian Kelly is calling a "recovery day" sprinkled through the camp schedule. So, a time to look back a bit. Kelly spoke Tuesday and Monday we saw player interviews with tight end Mason Taylor and defensive end Sai'vion Jones. You can read the highlights of their comments here. Jones, by the way, is listed at 6-foot-6 and 280 pounds. He told reporters that he's actually about 288 pounds now, nearly 50 pounds more than he weighed when he first showed up at LSU. But the junior, a projected starter, said he doesn't feel he has lost any speed from St. James High. Scary thought for the Tigers' opponents. After the way special teams struggled last season, they comprise an area of intense interest during camp. Make that intense anxiety. Brian Polian, special teams coordinator last season in year one of the Kelly era, is gone. John Jancek is the new coordinator, but LSU is taking a more all hands approach to special teams with duties spread out among most of the staff. That's probably a good thing for Jancek, who had to shift from coaching outside linebackers to defensive line when D-line coach Jimmy Lindsey suffered some sort of unspecified illness before the start of camp. Wide receiver Aaron Anderson, a transfer from Alabama, is expected to factor into the return game. In fact, he could be a major factor if LSU's special teams are to make a major turnaround from the liability they were in 2022. Finally, we're looking way back with another excerpt from my book, "LSU By The Numbers." Wednesday marked 25 days until LSU's Sept. 3 season opener with Florida State, so we remember No. 25 Josh Reed, the 2001 Biletnikoff Award winner. When writing the book, it was one of the harder choices as I had to pick No. 25 between Reed and Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Y.A. Tittle. Tittle was a two-time All-SEC performer and of course went on to a long and distinguished NFL career. But Reed's honors, including being an All-American and a two-time All-SEC pick himself, gave him the nod over Tittle in my book. Of course, you're free to disagree. Debating who's the best this or that is one of the most entertaining things about sports. Well, that's all for today. Practice resumes Thursday morning, so expect a lot more content from LSU's camp moving forward. Thanks for subscribing and keep reading, Scott Rabalais |
