Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Poppy Harlow

CNN’s Poppy Harlow had an epic clash Friday morning with Trump campaign adviser Mercedes Schlapp, as part of a lengthy interview on President Donald Trump’s coronavirus response. As Schlapp enthusiastically defended the president, Harlow conducted a detailed, real-time fact check on her claims.

Harlow read several polls that show Dr. Anthony Fauci is far more trusted than Trump when it comes to information regarding the pandemic, adding, “The president has a serious credibility crisis here.”

Schlapp responded by ripping the Quinnipiac poll, maintaining that it leans more favorably towards Democrats and Independents, prompting Harlow to quickly dispute the claim and point out that 52 percent of rural voters and 55 percent of voters without college degrees do not trust coronavirus information provided by Trump.

Harlow then listed six times that the president has praised Quinnipiac polls on Twitter, continuing to debunk Schlapp’s claims.

Schlapp maintained that Trump had taken the pandemic seriously from the beginning, and Harlow read several examples where he downplayed its seriousness. This went on and on through several different topics du jour, and each time Schlapp tried to score a point, Harlow had the receipts, waiting and ready to swat her down.

We expect White House officials to paint the rosiest picture possible, and to advocate for the administration's policies. But good journalism requires not taking anything politicians say at face value, doing your research, and challenging all claims. Harlow did all that, with rapid-fire intensity.

Watch the showdown for yourself.

MEDIA LOSER:
Melissa Francis

On Fox News' Outnumbered on Thursday, host Melissa Francis not only said she doesn’t trust her network’s polling, she boasted that she gives misleading answers when questioned by pollsters.

During a panel conversation about polling, the 2020 election, and the demotion of Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale, Francis revealed that she habitually lies to pollsters.

"I have a blast when they call me," said Francis, who said she had personally been polled several times recently.

"None of the information" is accurate, she bragged, "sometimes I’m someone who voted for de Blasio but now is thinking about Trump. Sometimes it just depends how I toyed with these folks."

When Francis was challenged on Twitter by The Contemptor founder (and Mediaite alum) Justin Baragona, she doubled down, expressly stating, "Any pollster who calls me – I do not tell the truth. It’s not their business. But I misled them left and right in equal measure."

"Polling is in fact garbage," Francis wrote, adding, "I don’t trust any polling at all based on my personal experience" -- including that of her own network.

Francis characterized what she is doing as "toying." Toying is when you drag a piece of yarn in front of a cat. Deliberately providing information you know to be false is lying.

For a "journalist" -- yes, those are some intentionally sarcastic scare quotes -- to not only admit to lying but do so in a way that encourages other people to lie is profoundly unethical and irresponsible.

The A-Block

Trouble in Portland

Badgeless federal officers rounded up protesters in Portland, Oregon on Thursday night and forced them into unmarked vehicles.

According to a report by Oregon Public Broadcasting News, protesters were peacefully demonstrating outside of Multnomah County Justice Center and the Mark O. Hatfield Federal Courthouse when several were detained by the officers and put into the unmarked minivans.

It was a troubling scene for many. Well, not everyone...

Police Brutality is "Funny"?

RedState Managing Editor "Streiff" -- he writes under a pseudonym -- had a remarkable take on the news from Portland: amusement.

Streiff responded to a tweet about peaceful protester being "shot in the head" by calling it "good news," and making a joke that a head shot meant "so we can assume no vital organ was injured." He later retweeted a video of a cop pulling up a protester's mask to pepper spray them in the face with the comment, "holy crap this is funny."

Perhaps the most damning criticism we can offer is to say we would have called him the loser of the day if he were more prominent, but he is the managing editor of a longtime conservative blog that is part of the Townhall and Salem Media network of websites, and he is responsible for directing the tone of their coverage. To say these attitudes are troubling is an understatement.

Convicted by a Kangaroo Court!

OK, let's have a palate cleanser, and what's better than a funny critter story? Here's a tale of an escaped pet kangaroo that went on a frolic through a Fort Lauderdale neighborhood, until finally being apprehended by local police, put in the back of a cop car, and put in "jail" in the department's horse stables until wildlife authorities could come take custody of the rogue roo.

We've got lots of photos and videos of the troublemaking marsupial, including the poor little guy looking forlornly out behind bars.

Coach Pop Pops Off

Gregg Popovich is well known for not doing two things: losing games and holding his tongue.

The outspoken San Antonio Spurs head coach lived up to his reputation during a media session Thursday, calling out Texas state leaders as “cowards” for their handling of the coronavirus pandemic and saying that he feels that his team is safer in Florida.

He also wore a T-shirt with an all caps political message on it

Well, At Least She's Organized

White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany has brought a giant white binder with her to recent press briefings, and a Reuters photographer caught a detailed glimpse of the contents, catching a side view of the binder and its tabbed categories.

McEnany has developed a reputation for flipping open her briefing book after a particularly confrontational question and reading verbatim from pre-written responses, which often included canned attacks on the press or praise from allies.

The categories revealed in the Reuters photograph included some expected current topics, like ones related to the coronavirus pandemic, but also several that seemed connected to personal grudges of the president and other amusing items. Like "GOYA." See for yourself here.

That's Not a Wave; That's a Tsunami

Exactly one month after Vice President Mike Pence declared there would be “no second wave” of the coronavirus pandemic, the United States hit another record high of 77,000 cases, and reported 940 new confirmed deaths.

As Pence joins Trump in trying to force schools to reopen beginning next month, the virus itself has been weighing in with record case numbers in hotspots like Florida, Arizona, and Texas. Sigh.

A World in Which Shep Thrives?

Mediaite's Joe DePaolo has a sobering take on Shepard Smith's upcoming new CNBC show: it's likely "hopelessly doomed."

Praising Smith's integrity, storytelling, and communication skills, DePaolo calls him "everything a news anchor should be" and describes his "just the facts" approach for his new show as a "noble mission."

"Here’s the problem: Americans have decided they don’t want that on cable," DePaolo writes.

Maybe Joe's Right

If you weren't already depressed enough about the state of cable news, here's a real mess over at Fox. A stunning new report detailed anonymous comments from multiple Fox News staffers, railing against the network’s treatment of racism and Black Lives Matter protests.

Said one incensed staffer: “They created a cell—they created a white supremacist cell inside the top cable network in America, the one that directly influences the president… This is rank racism excused by Murdoch."

There are many more.

Seriously, What The @#$! Happened on Twitter Wednesday?

That's what several members of Congress are asking after an astonishing breach of security of some very prominent Twitter accounts occurred on Wednesday. Hackers seized control of accounts belonging to former President Barack Obama, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian West, Microsoft CEO Bill Gates, and several others.

Rep. James Comer (R-KY), chair of the House Oversight Committee, wants answers from Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, and he wants them now

Get Well Soon, RBG

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg announced on Friday that she’s been receiving chemotherapy to treat “a recurrence of cancer.” She said that she had been tolerating the treatment well and had been able to continue her work on the Court.

Cancer plays no political favorites and we wish her our prayers and best wishes for a quick and full recovery.

‘A Blatant Lie’

The coronavirus pandemic response continues to be unfortunately political, and that's definitely happening in Georgia.

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms came on CNN Friday morning and called Gov. Brian Kemp’s claims she’s shuttering businesses and undermining “economic growth” a “blatant lie” on CNN after it was revealed that Kemp is suing Bottoms to stop a public face mask mandate in the city.

Bottoms told CNN she believes the lawsuit is retaliation from Kemp after she claimed Trump broke the law by not wearing a mask at the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport during a visit just one day prior.

“I do believe it’s personal retaliation, and he sued us personally. He did not sue the city of Atlanta. He filed suit against myself and our city council personally,” declared Bottoms, adding, “This was one day after the president’s visit to our city and, again, it is a complete waste of time and money to file suit against the capital city of this state in which he is supposed to lead.”
