“Illegible Cloud” began as a little nonce form, revolving around each stanza’s repetition of “in” and “where.” I think I was feeling my way towards location, or maybe dislocation, within the multiple surfaces of a nagging, intimate memory that reflected back something vital yet illegible. The poem sat with me for over a decade; experiencing the buoyant opacity of Cy Twombly’s immense painting, Say Goodbye, Catullus, to the Shores of Asia Minor, made me remember its lines and finally resituate myself among them.
