I am sure you have heard about the the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan. Since January 2021, more than 300,000 Afghans have been newly displaced inside the country due to insecurity and violence, and these numbers are growing daily.
The number of civilian casualties has risen sharply in the past six months and an increasing proportion of women and children have been among those targeted.
To raise awareness about this unfolding crisis, Australia for UNHCR is collaborating with the Australian International Development Network (AIDN), to present a briefing on Wednesday 4 August at 2pm.
I will be speaking about the important role UNHCR is playing, while also drawing on my own experience of time spent in the region.
Joining me on the panel will be:
Najeeba Wazefadost, Asia Pacific Network of Refugees Ali Reza Yunespour, Partnership Coordinator, Afghanistan School Program, Indigo Foundation Nishank Motwani, Director of Research and Policy at ATR Consulting
The discussion will be led by Dan Oakes, senior reporter with the ABC’s investigative reporting team who broke the story, The Afghan Files.
This will be an interesting and in-depth conversation around the current issues and how the international community can support those on the frontline of this crisis.
