Around 1928 © CNA, Fonds Institut Emile Metz, HISACS000207V01 | | Forging a Modern Society | | Photography and Corporate Communication in the Industrial Age, ARBED 1911−1937 | | 10 June – 17 December 2017 | | | | | | | | "Forging a modern society" showcases a collection of glass plate negatives and positives from an industrial archive and pieces together the journey they have taken over time. These photographs from the era of industrialisation, discovered in 2007 at the Lycée Technique Privé Emile Metz in Dommeldange and featured in an exhibition at the Centre national de l’audiovisuel (CNA – National Audiovisual Centre), have had a long and varied history, serving a multitude of social purposes and being reproduced in different contexts. Created as tools for corporate communication in the first half of the 20th century, the glass plates soon became relics of Luxembourg’s industrial history, a visual representation of the development of the Institut Emile Metz and ARBED Dommeldange over time. After being donated to the CNA, they underwent meticulous archival work and digitisation and were carefully restored by students from the Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft (HTW – University of Applied Sciences) in Berlin. The HISACS Institut Emile Metz collection is now part of Luxembourg’s visual cultural heritage and has been made available for research purposes. In 2012, the glass plates were the inspiration for the FAMOSO research project – Fabricating Modern Societies: Industries of Reform as Educational Responses to Societal Challenges, based at the University of Luxembourg. The Institut Emile Metz photographs opened up new avenues for research and investigation, and thanks to the concerted efforts of the CNA and the team of researchers at the University of Luxembourg, their cultural significance has now been fully recognised. The exhibition also features record covers, photographs documenting fashion statements and publications of the time. Emotions, escapades, excesses: More than 150 photographs, record covers, and fanzines give witness to the attitude surrounding the historic impact of three musical genres reflected in the exhibition’s title ROCK.FUNK.PUNK. at the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt. Featured are works of ten different internationally renowned photographers that have been created since the 1960s until today. The photographs show famous clubs and stages, from the alternative Punk club scene in San Francisco of the 1970s to “Rock am Ring”, the annual open air festival at the Nürburgring. And the images show the protagonists: Visitors can encounter over 100 icons of music history, including Iggy Pop, Janis Joplin, David Bowie, Dead Kennedys, The Rolling Stones, Motörhead, Coldplay, Beth Ditto, Jay Z, Deichkind, Udo Lindenberg, and the Toten Hosen. The bands and musicians are seen on stage, sometimes in world famous poses, but also backstage, both intimate and immediate. Libbert has been working as a street photographer and photojournalist for nearly 60 years and the exhibition will focus on key works made during his earlier career. This will be the first recent opportunity to explore the full range of Libbert’s talents and will include a number of previously unseen prints such as West Indian Arrivals, Waterloo Station, 1961 or Outside the Blackie Art Centre, Liverpool, 1973. Libbert’s self-effacing charm and modesty have always allowed him to get close to his subjects such as children enthralled in the cinema in Salford in the 1950s or those at the heart of the tension in Harlem during the race riots of the mid-1960s. Libbert travelled widely during 1950s and 60s, often working on assignment for The Guardian newspaper, and the photographs he made capture a radically changing world with huge compassion – ranging from the poverty of post-war Manchester to the energy of New York in the late 60s. The majority of works in the exhibition will be vintage prints, made by Libbert at the time that they were taken – these have a particularly rich surface and are often unique. | |

Photographs by Omar Victor Diop ”Working with portraits forces us to think about the future.” Omar Victor Diop’s work depicts the diversity of societies and lifestyles that characterize Africa today and questions whether we can speak of a homogeneous “Africa”. He focuses on people’s different backgrounds and their pursuit of realizing their personal dreams – without any limitations. All the photographs in the exhibition were staged in collaboration with those depicted. The intention is to show how complex people are. The portrayed all work in the creative field, for example as designers, musicians, actors, fashion designers. In the pictures we meet the urban culture emerging in Africa’s countries right now. Omar Victor Diop sees Africa as a concept – an abstract mental construction –somewhere between dreams and visions. That’s where possibilities can be found. The textiles used as backdrops have been collected by Omar Victor Diop’s family for generations. The different fabrics all have their own history and each was specially selected for the portrayed individual. By using the textiles as backdrops in the portraits, Omar Victor Diop wishes to convey different emotions while at the same time placing the pictures in a historical context. | |

Together, Anders Petersen, Lorenzo Castore and Martin Bogren present three distinct photographic personalities and perspectives of everyday life in Italy. The outcome is a portrait of the country that is anything but typical. Anders Petersen has captured Italy on camera since the 1980s and is considered a master of international photography. Lorenzo Castore is an Italian filmmaker and photographer who finds inspiration from around the globe. Martin Bogren is a photographer who makes reference to his upbringing in Scania but also captures people from faraway places on film. One thing they all have in common is the belief that photography is life; as well as a personal history of the photographer. Anders Petersen, Lorenzo Castore and Martin Bogren all work within a tradition defined by Christer Strömholm (1918-2002). Christer Strömholm’s photographic narrative has influenced several generations of photographers and can be described in short as humanistic street photography. In 2014, Dunkers kulturhus exhibited a major retrospective of Christer Strömholm’s work CHR – POST SCRIPTUM. ITALY makes reference to that exhibition as well as Dunkers kulturhus’ long-standing tradition of exhibiting black and white photography. In the exhibition Cityscapes + Birdmen photo's of city scenes in Paramaribo alternate with portraits of birdmen, creating a layered image of Suriname’s culture and society. Birdmen Between 2006 and 2009 Jacquie Maria Wessels made portraits of macho Surinamese men who are obsessed with their little songbirds. In the songbird contests, one of the most popular sports in Suriname, men from all segments of the population come together amiably, in peaceful combat over which bird sings the best. Stereotypical male attributes such as clothing, cars and motorcycles play an important role in this lifestyle but in the photographs by Wessels the men also reveal another side of themselves. After the independence of Suriname in 1975 this pastime came to The Netherlands along with the Surinamers. Both in Suriname and in The Netherlands, the contests are held very early on Sunday mornings: in Paramaribo on Independence Square and in The Netherlands on lawns in parks in Amsterdam, The Hague and other cities. Cityscapes The urban landscape photographs provide an external context of the subject’s home environment. In 2015, Italian-born photographer Renato D’Agostin took the challenge and travelled the 7,439 miles from New York to Los Angeles on his 1983 BMW motorcycle, developing film in hotel sinks along the way. This initiatic journey gave rise to a series of bright and contrasted images, overwhelming with beauty, subtlety and grace, entitled "7439". Renato D’Agostin was born in Venice, Italy, in 1983. He began his career in photography in 2001 by exploring his daily world with his father’s camera, and thereby discovered new ways of transcending the beauty of the Most Serene Republic of Venice. Finding his inspiration in urban life, he traveled through the capitals of Western Europe, and after a period in Milan where he worked with the production studio Maison Sabbatini, he moved to New York. In 2005, he attended Fine Print courses at the International Center of Photography (ICP) and soon after became assistant to Ralph Gibson. Dislocating subjects from their realities, Renato D'Agostin opens new portals in the viewer’s imagination by reinterpreting the relationship between space, architecture and people. The now legendary cooperative was founded in 1947 by Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger and David „Chim“ Seymour and celebrates its seventieth birthday this years. Davidson counts among the most influential members of the agency. Like few others, he has shaped the genre of reportage with his series on subcultures and marginalized groups. The exhibition offers an overview of the artist's entire career, more than fifty years of continuous work, from his most renowned series, such as Brooklyn Gang (1959), Time of Change: Civil Rights Movement (1961-1965) and East 100th Street (1966-1968), to one of his latest projects, Nature of Los Angeles (2008-2013). Bruce Davidson set out on what was to become a passionate relationship with photography at a very young age. More than responding to a specific style, his work is characterized by a personal vision of reality that manifests itself in his art, not so much in the individual images as in the effect produced by the reiteration and juxtaposition of themes and characters. | | As was the case in the first auction, the second auction titled "L'Excellence d'un Regard II" will take place on June 16th and will once again present Gérard Lévy’s collection in four chapters: Chapter 1: His primitives… We begin with a selection of prints by esteemed primitive French photographers such as Henri Le Secq, Charles Marville, Félix Moulin, Edouard Baldus, Gustave Le Gray, Charles Hippolyte Aubry, Adolphe Braun, Aimé Civiale and many more, as well as an ensemble of several daguerreotypes: a quarter plate daguerreotype by Louis-Noël Richou representing a couple seated at a table, with the man reading a letter, or of a half plate daguerreotype by Eduard Vaillat of a young boy playing dominoes. There is also an impressive ensemble of photographs and documents concerning the Prince Imperial, 16 prints: salt paper (1) and albumen paper prints of various formats of which two are photomontages, by Léopold Ernest & Pierre-Louis Mayer & Pierson, Édouard Delessert, Henri Tournier, Pierre-Ambroise Richebourg, estimated 6 000 / 8 000 €. (visual – lot 29) Among the many distinguished works in this auction are three masterpieces by Nadar (Félix Tournachon, dit): The first is a salt paper print taken of his son Paul at a young age. On the back of this print we find a caricature that Nadar made of Paul, and a handwritten note from 1923 by Paul Nadar to his daughter Marthe, telling her that this portrait of her father was "beloved by her grandparents and framed and hung on a wall of the Nadar family home". The work is estimated 50 000 / 60 000 €. Another portrait is of Eugène Pelletan. The signed salt paper print taken in 1854 is estimated 18 000 / 20 000 €. Yet another exceptional work is a portrait of the mime Charles Debureau taken between 1854 and 1855 for the series called "Tête d’expression". This large format salt paper print is the only print known to this day in this format and in this framing. As Maria Morris Hambourg described in the catalog of the "Nadar" exhibition of 1994, in this unusual framing of the mime in ¾ view, this rare salt paper print transforms a study of expressions into a study of physiognomy. This work is estimated 60 000 / 80 000 €. (visuals –lot 30, lot 34) This chapter ends on a selection of 11 works, stereoscopic photographs in direct vue on one plate or simultaneously animated photographs on one plate, by the French mathematician Eugène Estanave. Foam Fusion is one of the focal points of this year dedicated to venturing into new territories, exploring beyond the limits of photography and developing ties across different disciplines. The festival's programme, fueled by the fusion of these diverse perspectives, consists of surprising presentations and performances, a variety of round table discussions, artist talks and workshops. The participants, ranging from cultural institutions and collectives, to individual artists and researchers, like Foam, place great value on collaboration and its evolving role within their respective fields. PROGRAMME Each day of Foam Fusion kicks off with a breakfast session and ends with Music & Cocktails. The festival co-operates with galleries, museums and cultural institutions around Copenhagen and Southern Sweden and has exhibitions in public spaces including all Metro trains and at the Metro Fence. The festival centre is called Photo City providing the setting for 13 exhibitions, and Photo Stage is the stage for artist talks, workshops and debates. The exhibition committee of the festival consists of curator, Jens Erdman Rasmussen, post.doc. at The University of Southern Denmark, Charlotte Præstegaard Schwartz, and head of the department of the education of photo journalism at The Danish School of Media and Journalism, Søren Pagter, and Managing Director of Copenhagen Photo Festival, Maja Dyrehauge Gregersen. Copenhagen Photo Festival had 47,602 visitors in 2016 and 55 exhibitions in collaboration with 50 different exhibition sites, including Photographic Centre and The National Museum of Photography. Every year 3-400 Danish and foreign photographers contribute to the festival programme. The programme is out now This year’s programme paying tribute to the photography in its many aspects by presenting some of the latest and most thought-provoking works within art and documentary photography. The programme gives everyone a chance to gain an extensive knowledge about the photographic medium by looking, listening, learning and being an active participant. Last year the festival launched a new format of the programme in a pocket-size consisting of both the full exhibition programme as well as all the events during the festival.
