Established in 1956 at the end of the Anglo- Egyptian colonial rule, the Republic of Sudan had its borders drawn by its very European predecessors with little concern to the cultural and ethnic reality of the region. South Sudan’s independence allowed the borders to be reconfigured to extent. Regardless, the world’s newest nation remains in shambles, en masse. Its short history has demonstrated that internal solidarity along the ethnic lines has long lost its echo among the rivalries within the country’s ruling party, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM). | | |

The exhibition is based on the Khalip family archive, collection of The Lumiere Center and private collections. The name of Yakov Khalip is famous far beyond the Russian museum world and photographic collections. The exhibition of Yakov Khalip’s work, as well as the serious scope of publishing efforts, should have been available in Russia years ago. However, the body of work of one of Soviet photography classics had remained unstudied for over last 35 years. The Lumiere Center for Photography strives to fill the gap and unveils the archive of the master. | | |

| Elliott Erwitt, Texas, USA, 1956 © Elliot Erwitt / Courtesy of Edwynn Houk Gallery, New York & Zürich | | | | - 19 November 2016 | | | | | | | | A photographer since 1948, Elliott Erwitt’s early black and white photographs set a precedent for the genre of social landscape and anticipated the iconic imagery of Lee Friedlander, Garry Winogrand, and Robert Frank. Erwitt’s skill as a photographer is evident in his juxtaposition of elements within a frame. He creates relationships between people, places, and things, which reveal the world in a unique, humorous way. Throughout his distinguished career, he has taken some of the most memorable images of the 20th century including President John F. Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, and Che Guevara. His personal pictures or “snaps” as he refers to them embody a sense of the absurd, wit and charm. While Erwitt always carried two cameras with black and white and color film, he comes from an era when few photographers worked in color. Color film was in its infancy and primarily used for commercial and editorial work, but time and technology have changed that. However, Erwitt’s craftsmanship and wry sensibility are apparent in both. | | |

| | | | | | | Dreamlands: Immersive Cinema and Art, 1905–2016 focuses on the ways in which artists have dismantled and reassembled the conventions of cinema—screen, projection, darkness—to create new experiences of the moving image. The exhibition will fill the Museum’s 18,000-square-foot fifth-floor galleries, and will include a film series in the third-floor theater. The exhibition’s title refers to the science fiction writer H.P. Lovecraft’s alternate fictional dimension, whose terrain of cities, forests, mountains, and an underworld can be visited only through dreams. Similarly, the spaces in Dreamlands will connect different historical moments of cinematic experimentation, creating a story that unfolds across a series of immersive spaces. | | |

| | | | Four years since the fall of the Gaddafi regime in October 2011, Libya is experiencing an unprecedented political, military and humanitarian crisis. While negotiations for a national unity agreement have taken place since early 2015 between the various political entities claiming power, heavy fighting between rival militias and factions continues to break out in the country on a daily basis. The surge of hope that followed the revolution has now given way to chaos. Representing the dramatic and complex reality in the region has become an increasingly challenging task. The Carmignac Photojournalism Award has resolved to support a photojournalist in the implementation, production and dissemination of an in-depth project on this country from which we now receive little to no images. This year is the first time that the Award will focus on a conflict zone. It was thus necessary to adapt the Award organisation in order to take this situation into account. | | |

On his return, he completed a famous series of portraits for Editions Braun before joining a group of photographers to record the Liberation of Paris in 1945; he directed his famous film “Le Retour”, a documentary on the repatriation of prisoners of war and deportees. In the meantime, The Museum of Modern Art in New-York, thinking Henri Cartier-Bresson had died during the war, began to prepare a so called “posthumous” exhibition of his work. Then he showed up, back from the camps and was delighted to hear that the exhibition was going ahead despite the fact that he hadn’t died.. | | |

Her photography series, which are made with both humour and sarcasm, get to the heart of the ambivalence in Iranian society, particularly in relation to the role of women, in an unusually dramatic manner. For good reason, Shadi Ghadirian’s work has been celebrated for more than ten years in exhibitions the world over. Now AB43 CONTEMPORARY presents the artist for the first time in Switzerland. Shadi Ghadirian makes the conflict between tradition and modernity in her culture her subject, as well as the role of women in a society that is dominated by male stereotypes. Inspired by her own life experiences, Ghadirian uses humour and parody as starting points to show the paradoxes of women’s lives in Iran. The series "NIL NIL" confronts the banality of the everyday with the ever-present reality of war in Iran’s recent history. The war’s arsenal of weapons and equipment such as helmets, bullets and hand grenades force their way into day-to-day life and, at the same time, are rendered trivial by their everyday surroundings. | | |
