Foam 3h presents the first solo exhibition of recently graduated Dutch photographer Steffi Reimers, the 7th recipient of the Florentine Riem Vis Grant. For the conceptual photo project Guilty Grounds, she travelled to Calabria, southern Italy, to explore the dark side of Calabrean history and the origins and kidnapping practices of the world's most powerful criminal organisation, the 'Ndrangheta. Reimers uses the concept of "Guilty Landscapes" to convey the complexity of this tragic history. She reveals the landscapes of Aspromonte National Park as silent witnesses to the pervasive influence of the 'Ndrangheta. Landscapes that were once untouched and peaceful now resonate with memories of events that have subtly left their mark.

This project highlights its unique use of forensic light, which reveals traces of atrocities and confronts the viewer with the uncomfortable truth. The addition of a 'prayer card' to the exhibition introduces a duality and highlights the role of faith and crime in the region. Although not the central theme, the prayer card serves to highlight the delicate balance between these two aspects and offers a narrative that invites deeper contemplation. In a region where the mafia and its activities are denied, Guilty Grounds is a powerful reminder of a shocking part of Italian history, confronting the viewer with the uncomfortable truth. In this project, Reimers' choice to exclude human figures from her images is evident, which emphasises the landscapes all the more as both 'guilty' and 'testifying' entities. Each image bears silent witness to the events in Calabria and invites the viewer to join in and make their own interpretations.

Steffi Reimers (NL, 1995) completed an internship with documentary photographer Niels Stomps in 2020. In 2021, she obtained her bachelor's degree in photography from the Hogeschool voor Toegepaste Fotografie in Amsterdam. In the same year, she exhibited at the Nederlands Fotomuseum Rotterdam, and in 2022 she was one of the GUP New Dutch Photography Talents. In 2022, she published the book Aftermath for which she spent two months in Srebenica, impressively portraying the aftermath of the Yugoslavian civil war. Transience, trauma and loss are recurring themes in much of her work. Besides her free work, she has also been employed by the Netherlands Forensic Institute as a medical-forensic photographer since 2022. Here she documents forensic investigations and works with a specialised team to give a voice to victims of violence who can no longer express themselves.

Florentine Riem Vis Grant
Steffi Reimers is the seventh recipient of the Florentine Riem Vis Grant. The stipend was established in memory of Florentine Riem Vis (1959-2016) and is awarded annually to enable a young artist to further develop their artistic career. Previous recipients include Bebe Blanco Agterberg (2022), Karolina Wojtas (2021), Gilleam Trapenberg (2020), Solène Gün (2019), Rebecca Sampson (2018) and Stefanie Moshammer (2016/17).

With "HABITAT: BERLIN–CHARLOTTENBURG", Anne Schönharting presents her first solo exhibition in France at the Goethe-Institut Bordeaux.

Initially shown at the Haus am Kleistpark and the Villa Oppenheim in Berlin, the exhibition can now be seen abroad for the first time. The portrait series is a milieu study carried out over 10 years (2012-2022). Schönharting offers fascinating insights into the lives and surroundings of her subjects. The exhibition is characterized by a subtle image composition as well as natural lighting.

It is accompanied by the book of the same name, published by Hartmann Books.

Anne Schönharting, a member of the Ostkreuz agency since 1999, was born in Meissen (GDR) in 1973 and now lives and works in Berlin-Pankow. Her focus is portrait and artistic documentary photography.

Clervaux - Cité de l'image enters its new season 2023-2024 with 6 new open-air exhibitions.

We dive into a world full of fantastic forms, approaches, themes and techniques. The six photographers invited this year use their own formal language to express emotions, convey stories or present certain concepts. In this open-air exhibition, the focus is on playing with contrasts, experimenting with techniques or on the most diverse stylistic elements.

With depictions of fundamental themes in the life of a young woman, the artist Sanja Marušić attracts full attention with her colourful photographs on the market square. Heading towards the church, we pass the arcades with the photographic works of Christine Erhard, which have been developed out of a sculptural process in her studio. Opposite the church, Thaddäus Biberauer takes us on his journeys through nature. The snapshots, almost painterly in scene, invite us to dream. In Steph Meyer's works, the focus is on the photograph and the viewer. The picture within the picture, in which the viewers in the arcades of the Grand-Rue are included in the snapshot of the documented photo exhibition or even become voyeurs. On the castle plateau, Liz Lambert gives us a deep insight into her very personal story. In a poetic and partly symbolic way, she explores the questions of how relationships come into being and develop. In Tina Lechner's works in the garden of the castle, she focuses on the exploration of identity and the female body. Covered with self-produced props, this becomes a retrofuturistic sculpture.

Through their creative and poetic manner, the photographers a…

"Motion is emotion. Everything gives off waves of energy, otherwise called frequencies. They are the very fiber of our being." Alia Ali

In her fourth solo exhibition with us, Alia Ali presents vibrant and energetic new work. Full-body portraits are more common, often appearing to be in motion, and her formats have become more variable. For the first time, Alia Ali also ventures into sculpture — her hand-carved works made of Lapis Lazuli re-imagine millennia-old artifacts from her home country Yemen and are part of her "Yemeni Futurism" project.

Alia Ali (Arabic: عاليه علي // Sabean: 𐩲𐩱𐩡𐩺𐩲|𐩲𐩱𐩡) is a Yemeni-Bosnian-US multi-media artist whose work explores cultural binaries, challenges culturally sanctioned oppression, and confronts the dualistic barriers of conflicted notions of gender, politics, media, and citizenship. Working between language, photography, video, textile, and installation, Ali’s work addresses the politicization of the body, histories of colonization, imperialism, sexism, and racism through projects that take pattern and textile as their primary motif.

Ali is currently expanding her practice by drawing on stories from Yemen including the nostalgic past of Queen Belquis of Saba (also known as the Queen of Sheba). By investigating histories of the distant past, she addresses the realities of the dystopian present in order to carve out spaces for radically imagined possibilities for the future in what has evolved to be Yemeni Futurism.

Ali is a graduate of Wellesley College and the California Institute of the Arts. She lives and works in and between New Orleans, Pari…

Françoise Morin and Les Douches la Galerie are pleased to invite you to the opening of the new collective exhibition, 'I want to see art', curated by Eric Rémy. This exhibition is a vibrant tribute to Christian Bouqueret (1950-2013), historian, gallery owner, and collector, who passed away ten years ago. It’s a rare opportunity to explore vintage prints from photographers, particularly those from the interwar period, which he passionately advocated during his lifetime. The exhibition also showcases the contemporary German photographic scene.

Five years ago, I discovered Les Douches la Galerie, located two streets over from the flat where I had lived with Christian Bouqueret for thirteen years. The gallery's director, Françoise Morin, was surprised by this random coincidence when I explained my connection to him, as she was in the very process of consulting the catalogues of the photographers Pierre Boucher, Jean Moral and René Zuber that Christian had written. I took that as a sign pointing to a future collaboration to bring those photographs from the interwar period to light and thereby preserve the memory of his work. – Eric Rémy

As a young man drawn to the artistic avant-garde, Christian Bouqueret regularly visited the Musée d'art moderne de Paris and the galleries on the Boulevard Saint-Germain, especially those managed by Denise René. In 1973, while an active member of FAHR1, a romantic involvement led him to abandon his Chinese studies in Paris and head for Berlin where he studied art history and German. In the cosmopolitan city, where the wall still rose as a bulwark between two world views, he discovered the Bauhaus school that brought photography into the educat…

Presented by Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels and the Centre national de la danse, in collaboration with Photo Days.

● Costanza GASTALDI, Oro negro
exhibition of the 2022 winner of the Photo Days x FFP x Iandé artist residency in Brazil November 4 . December 3, 2023, at Atelier PGR, 1 villa Gaudelet, Paris 11e
During the 2022 portfolio readings, Italian photographer Costanza Gastaldi has won an artistic residency in Brazil, a collaboration between Photo Days, the Iandé collective and the Paranapiacaba Festival. Her images speak of a distant, colonial past, of the legends that have come down to us today, and of the future stakes involved in preserving the Mata Atlantica and its eco-system.

Christopher Anderson naturally began photographing his family after his son Atlas came into the world in 2008. When his daughter Pia was born, he continued the fatherly attempt to stop time and not let a single moment of this new life slip away. Marion features throughout these albums, as a woman, mother, and partner. As a documentary photographer, Christopher Anderson had never considered these personal photos as a ‘series’, but his opinion changed when war photographer Tim Hetherington pointed out that “They’re all about the passage of time.” Christopher Anderson began seeing his family pictures in a new light and realised that they may well be his best work. Pia, Son and Marion were published as three separate books, forming a unique and moving intimate family trilogy.

Kristine Potter’s latest photobook, Dark Waters, focuses on the violence that permeates the territory and popular culture of the USA. She contrasts a series of portraits of women with scenery that appears serene but is in fact views of places with sordid names, such as Murder Creek, Bloody River, and Rape Pond, evoking the domestic violence that allegedly took place there in the past. Drawing on the musical genre of murder ballads from the 19th and 20th centuries, Kristine Potter alludes to the flippant popular glorification of violence towards women that still pervades today’s cultural landscape.

Advertisements generally encourage us to picture Santa Claus as a cheerful chubby man with a bushy white beard and a smart red suit, always smiling and huggable. But what’s he really like? Collector Jean-Marie Donat scoured flea markets all over Europe to compile this extraordinary collection of photographs from the 1930s to the 1970s, in which we see the beloved myth become a nightmare of triviality and awkward clumsiness. This witty series seems most likely to confirm our childhood suspicions: Is Santa Claus just an ordinary man, after all?

Auction 1232: Classical Photography

No fewer than six works by Robert Mapplethorpe will be offered this season. Particularly noteworthy are two nude studies of the model "Ajitto" crouching on a pedestal in an aesthetic back and side view as lifetime prints from 1981, both in excellent condition (lot 716/717, € 10/15,000 each). The four rare gelatin silver prints of famous motifs by Helmut Newton, including "Ernesto Esposito and Frederica della Volpe in my Hotel Room, Montecatini, Italy" from 1988 (lot 722, € 15/20,000) and "Fat Hand and Dollars, Monte Carlo" from 1986 (lot 724, € 6/8,000), come from the same southern German private collection as well. The latter - like Albert Watson's "Monkey with Gun, New York" (lot 748, € 4/5,000) - a subtle, aesthetically packaged social critique.

The earliest highlight of the auction is an albumen print by Charles Marville ("Percement avenue de l'Opéra, Paris") from 1876, in which Charles Garnier's new Paris Opera House can be seen in the background as a symbol of the magnificent architecture of the Second Empire. From 1858 until his death, Marville documented the urban redevelopment of the capital under the direction of Georges-Eugène Baron Haussmann on behalf of the city of Paris (lot 600, € 5/6,000).

A thematic equivalent to this is August Sander's project 'Köln wie es war' (Cologne as it was), a documentation of a city in its 'old' state prior to its transformation or destruction in the war, from which the present Rhine panorama with cathedral originates. It is a signed vintage print in its original frame from 1939 (lot 611, € 6/8,000). Also noteworthy is the likewise signed vintage print of the "Malermeister", which Sander selected for his 'Menschen des Zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts' (People of the 20th Century). The print comes from the sitter's family (lot 608, € 4/5,000).

Photo Days 2023

For the past 4 years, Photo Days has been inviting visitors to a unique photographic experience in and around Paris. For the entire month, museums, cultural institutions, galleries, foundations, fairs and festivals join forces with Photo Days to introduce enthusiasts and curious onlookers to the full diversity of the worldwide photographic production.
Photo Days takes you from one bank of the Seine to the other, for an exceptional immersive experience, from November 3 to December 3.

Photo Days presents an exhibition of Elger Esser in the Rotonde Balzac, opened for the occasion. Presented by Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels and the Centre national de la danse, in collaboration with Photo Days.

exhibition of the 2022 winner of the Photo Days x FFP x Iandé artist residency in Brazil November 4 . December 3, 2023, at Atelier PGR, 1 villa Gaudelet, Paris 11e
