A woman in a formal white gown glances sideways, her gaze steady and her expression neutral. A set of hands – the body to whom they belong cropped from the frame – tends to the garment’s draped fabric, as if carefully fitting a wedding dress. To the rear, an older woman rests a weathered hand on the younger woman’s shoulder; the expression she wears is more sombre – a mother preparing to let go of her soon-to-be-married daughter, perhaps? Where a palette of black, white and textured greys frames each figure in murky shadow, small bursts of colour come from light leaks and the imperfections of analogue processing – conjuring a nostalgic sense of age, proffering honesty and authenticity.

But the origins of the image described here – a winner, briefly, of the 2023 Sony World Photography Awards by German artist Boris Eldagsen – are a far cry from those it implies; it was in fact produced by an AI image generator, employed by its creator to inspire debate. Where the World Photography Organisation claimed to have identified and accepted Eldagsen’s creative process of artificial co-creation, the artist himself declined the award.

Elegant, charming, and stunningly beautiful, Rodney Smith’s fashion photography is a delightful revelation.

Mystery and manners, romance and fun—the sophisticated compositions and stylish characters in the extraordinary pictures of fashion photographer Rodney Smith (1947–2016) exist in a timeless world of his imagination. Born in New York City, Smith started out as a photo-essayist, turned to portrait photography, and found his niche, and greatest success, in fashion photography. Inspired by W. Eugene Smith, taught by Walker Evans, and devoted to the techniques of Ansel Adams, Smith was driven by the dual ideals of technical mastery and pure beauty.

Best known for his exceptional fashion photographs, Rodney Smith’s life in photography brought him full circle—away from everything that he knew, and then back to the place he so desperately tried to leave behind. Over the course of a successful career that lasted more than 45 years, Smith developed a unique photographic vision, one that is beautiful, ordered, and inhabited by well-dressed ladies and gentlemen. In each of his carefully crafted compositions, Smith banishes the chaos of modern life for another that is grounded in a romantic view of the past. Like Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, he asks us to follow him down the rabbit hole to a fantastical place that is just beyond our reach, but one intended to inspire us to be better versions of ourselves. For Smith, who, like many gifted creatives, suffered from bouts of depression and anxiety, photography was a means of staying engaged with the world around him. It was also a tool for spiritual exploration and self-understanding.

He has portrayed luminaries from music, art and showbiz, surreally depicted the boundlessness of the big city and brought the greats of photographic history in front of the camera. With ABE FRAJNDLICH. CHAMELEON, the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt (FFF) presents the iridescent diversity in themes of the American photographer Abe Frajndlich (*1946, Frankfurt/Main).

On view are around 160 works from the 1970s onwards, including Frajndlich's earliest vintage prints from Cleveland. As a focal aspect, the FFF retrospective presents portraits of artists who influenced Abe Frajndlich's life: the performer Rosebud Conway, known as "Rosie", as well as Minor White, photographer, founder of the magazine Aperture and Frajndlich's photographic mentor. Also part of the show is the project Masters of Light – Frajndlich's first major series in colour. For this, he portrayed icons of photography who, in his view, had a decisive influence on the 20th century, including Gordon Parks, Louise Dahl-Wolfe, Berenice Abbott or Ilse Bing. Each of these staged pictures uniquely alludes to aspects of the icon’s life or work.

Frajndlich was commissioned by the FAZ Magazin to show his view of the American art scene in the 1980s and 90s. Extensive series of Cindy Sherman, Nancy Spero and David Ireland are good examples and on view for the first time. Also included: experimental street photography and the sensual associations from his book Eros Eterna (1999), without which "the chameleon" Fraijndlich would be unthinkable.

Abe Frajndlich's central subjects – creativity, identity, hope , freedom – are closely related to his biography. He was born in a "DP camp" (D…

Samuel Fosso has won the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize 2023. The artist was announced as the 2023 winner of the prestigious £30,000 prize at a special ceremony at The Photographers’ Gallery (TPG), London by artist Zak Ové on Thursday 11 May 2023.
The influential prize, in partnership with the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation, rewards artists and their projects recognised as having made the most significant contribution to the world of contemporary photography over the preceding 12 months.

Samuel Fosso was awarded the Prize for his exhibition "Samuel Fosso" at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris, (10 November 2021 – 13 March 2022). Since the mid-1970s, Samuel Fosso (b. 1962, Kumba, Cameroon) has dedicated his artistic practice to self-portraits and performative photography. Fosso’s retrospective exhibition traces a career of almost 50 years, bringing together iconic series, lesser-known works, archival material and previously unpublished images. Raised in Nigeria, Fosso fled the Biafran War as a young boy, and in 1972 was taken in by an uncle in Bangui in the Central African Republic.

In 1975, at the age of thirteen, Fosso opened his Studio Photo Nationale. Alongside commercial work, Fosso immediately began a series of self-portraits – a mode of representation he has never abandoned. Described as "a man of 1000 faces", Fosso plays the role of leading historical figures, including Martin Luther King, Angela Davis and Haile Selassie, and social archetypes in front of the camera, embodying a powerful way of existing in the world, and a vivid demonstration of photography’s role in the construction of myths. His work is deeply personal, he said "making pictures of myself later in life was a way for me to take back what I had been lacking as a child, to take back my reflection."

The other shortlisted artists - Bieke Depoorter, Arthur Jafa and Frida Orupabo - all received £5,000. The exhibition showcasing all four artists is at The Photographers’ Gallery until 11 June 2023. The exhibition will tour to the Muzeum Fotografi w Krakowie, Krakow, Poland (30 June to 17 September 2023).

Memoryscapes is a solo exhibition by the German artist Ursula Schulz-Dornburg, realised in collaboration with Lucy Rogers.

In 2012, Ursula Schulz-Dornburg travelled to north-eastern Kazakhstan to photograph the remains of the Soviet Union's largest nuclear weapons programme. Located in a vast area south-west of the city of Kurchatov, Opytnoe Pole was once a top-secret open-air laboratory, used to measure and record the devastating effects of nuclear weapons. Taken almost twenty years after the closure of the facility, Schulz-Dornburg's photographs portray a desolate landscape, devoid of life and still suffering the effects of radiation. The area was looted after its closure in 1991 – an act which inadvertently dispersed radioactive material across the continent – and later subject to an intensive clean-up operation by the Kazakh, Russian and US authorities. It is a landscape still laden with the artefacts of an architecture built to be destroyed.

Born in Berlin in 1938, Schulz-Dornburg grew up in the aftermath of the Second World War – in a divided Germany and an era defined by new borders in Europe and elsewhere. Since the 1970s, she has sought out places of transit and borderlands, locations geographically and politically caught up in a state of in-between, where multiple layers of history intersect, coexist and collide. Reflecting the lands in which she has travelled, her archive reveals a constellation which extends beyond the scope of individual images – an entanglement of narratives which overlap in time and space. Exhibitions and publications become a method for thinking through the archive, bringing together new and familiar works into new combinations and sequences.

The core focus of this major survey exhibition "Trace - Formations of Likeness", drawn exclusively from The Walther Collection, is portrait photography - of people, objects, and places - and the tracing of societal transformation across geographic spaces and contrasting socio-political and cultural landscapes. The photographic portrait is deployed as a means to shape identity, to advocate for social change and as a subversive strategy for visibility, often through an intimate investigation of politics of memory, history, and embodiment. The portraits on display range from Zanele Muholi's visual activism with its powerful presentation of Black members of the South African LGBTQ+ scene, to Accra Shepp's series of Occupy Wall Street protesters revolting against social and economic inequality in the streets of New York City, to Zhang Huan's documentation of his performances in which the human face is transformed into a stage expressing cultural belonging.#

The substantial breadth and dialogical scope of the exhibition, which encompasses works from the last three centuries and brings together artists from Africa, America, Europe, and Asia, enables audiences to consider not only the parallel histories of the medium, but for its materiality, taxonomy, and serial structures to be revealed and drawn into question. As with Karrabing Film Collective, this exhibition brings together artistic practices that are focused on the making of images, and the production of representations of the real and the imaginary.

The exhibition "Trace" is developed in close collaboration with The Walther Collection, a New York City / Neu-Ulm-based art foundation internationally recognised for their critical engagement with contemporary and historica…

"As an artist, my work always involves people, with them and for them,I create unusual narratives around daily situations to reveal new insights to what we have become overly accustomed to seeing."

Ruby Rumié’s fourth solo exhibition at the Nohra Haime Gallery, "Nosotros 172 años después," consists of a series of 100 photographs referencing the Colombian Caribbean: its people, their diversity and its food.

"Colombia is considered a country of many regions each with its own identity and characteristics. The Colombian Caribbean is no stranger to this. I started this project from the perspective of a Colombian woman, with a desire to question, as we are now living through a very tangible social fragmentation of our identity. During this questioning process of our history. I found and researched the collection of images of The Chorographic Commission and a series of academic texts from the 19th century. This allowed me to transfer this inquisitiveness to the nearest context that I am also familiar with, which is the Caribbean."

From this encounter and confrontation with these documents, "Nosotros 172 años después," Rumié invites us to reflect through these photographic portraitures on the lack of visual representations of the historical discourses that have defined the identity of the Colombian Caribbean from the New Granada to the present. "I chose food as a vehicle to create new narratives that celebrate the cultural diversity of this territory.

"The project puts together one hundred people from the Caribbean region whose unique characteristics share the passion and commitment for their trade, and express in a special way their taste and …

Deep Blue is a group exhibition that explores questions of identity, memory and ecology. The artists evoke spiritual and political symbolisms, metaphysical reflections and explore questions around non-Western spirituality and knowledge systems. As a premise for transformative, regenerative and empathetic futures, this exhibition features re-interpretations of the past from a space of healing, addressing significant secular issues.

The third edition of Porto’s photography biennial, entitled ‘Acts of Empathy’, focuses on assessing today’s social, ecological, and economic resources, and re-imagining a regenerative future. Bienal’23 co-artistic directors Jayne Dyer and Virgílio Ferreira invited 70 artists and 14 guest curators in 14 locations in Porto, transforming them into dynamic creative spaces where visitors are invited to participate in artistic ‘Acts of Empathy’.

Bienal’23 explores our ability to feel, collaborate and drive change through artistic acts of connectivity, reparation, and healing via CONECTAR, EXPANDIR, SUSTENTAR, VIVIFICAR (Connect, Expand, Sustain, Vivify), four sections that intersect local and global perspectives.

While SUSTENTAR features creative laboratories in Portuguese urban centers that look into urban and regional sustainability issues, VIVIFICAR, through artistic residencies with communities, addresses one of the most pressing issues in low-density territories: the settlement of populations. Because these two sections demand concrete solutions and actions, EXPANDIR brings an experimental dimension by presenting academic and professional socio-ecological initiatives for emerging artists. CONECTAR fosters diverse cultural and artistic ecosystems through the interchange of exhibition projects, ideas, and transdisciplinary practices on a national and worldwide scale.

Bienal'23 features projects that are supported by deliberate artist engagement in community and environmental activities in order to foster reparative acts and empathy for the future.

THE PROGRAMME OF THE 2023 PHOTOSZENE FESTIVAL

The renowned Photoszene Festival will take place in Cologne from May 12 to 21, 2023.

Seven exhibitions at ten locations in Cologne will form the core programme of the Photoszene Festival 2023: they include a show of current photographic positions in the Photoszene Co-Labs! and the residency project Artist Meets Archive #3.

In addition, more than 70 museums, galleries and art spaces in Cologne are participating with their photographic exhibition programs in the festival's large citywide participatory exhibition format. The NEXT! Festival der Jungen Photoszene is also aimed at young photographers and visitors with an extensive program.

Also new this year is the Thousandfold Photobook Fair, an international photobook market inviting visitors to the Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum on the opening weekend of May 13-14. It will be held in conjunction with the Portfolio Review SICHTBAR, which is now open for registrations! The opening weekend also offers an extensive program of events including a symposium, guided tours, and artist talks.
