This week, Steve Riegel walks you through his latest sport scale build - a Defense Support Program satellite designed to track and notify the military of missile launches. The last launch of these sattelites occured in 2007. So what you're getting in this plan is a rocket that looks like a satellite. It is very different from a traditional rocket.

This scale model also has a unique recovery system too. The rocket spins back down to the ground using its solar panels to guide the descent and cause rotation. Included in this article is everything you would need to do this project yourself, including all the templates, pattern sheets, and the artwork.

Lightning Bug Dual-Deployment Altimeter

Lightning Bug Altimeter

The Lightning Bug Dual Deployment Altimeter is unique in that it doesn't require a standard igniter for the deployment charges. It creates a plasma arc from ordinary wire to ignite the ejection charge. So it is cheaper to operate than other altimeters.

More Aerotech Motors

Aerotech has released two new single-use (DMS) high power motors: the I175WS-13A (38mm) and the G75M-13A (29mm). Somehow we missed the single-use G72DM-14A (29mm) sparky motor, so we added it to our selection as well.

Estes C5-3

Dubbed the "Super-C" by Estes Industries, this C motor packs some exciting kick. Contrary to common naming nomenclature, the C5-3 actually has a higher thrust spike than the C6 engines from Estes. And it burns slightly longer too.

This motor is best suited to heavier rockets (like those intended to loft payloads) and those with high amounts of drag (like flying saucers). Right now, there is only a short 3-second delay available. But we expect longer delays to be in the works.

Threaded Rod Retainer

The threaded rod motor retainer system is an inexpensive and versatile way to restrain the movement of rocket engines.

Pioneered by Cosmodrome Rocketry, this style of engine retainer is noted for its simplicity and ability to be used in any size rocket. It can even handle up to a three engine cluster.
